There are so many books about singing but so few about the physical voice, its look, its feel. If you want to play the violin, you buy one built to function. You can hold it, tune it, learn fingering and bowing techniques and, given a musical imagination, be some kind of artist with it. Do you know what your vocal body looks like, feels like? Until you do, to what are you applying your musical imagination? In SINGING: Nature's Gift to You you will find answers to that question. Singing is not about being a "star" unless you want it to be. Singing is part of your nature, an expression of your consciousness, an emotional release, a tonic for your psyche, the primal scream gone pretty. The journey of self-discovery of your melodic nature can be rested whenever you like. Just because you work-out in a gym doesn't mean that you are dreaming of a Mr. Universe crown. There are so many plateaus after becoming "fit." Hang out where you are most comfortable. The workout that Franco Spoto proposes here, after basic understanding of support, breath pressure and feeling the physical voice, can help you become the most natural jazz, folk or pop singer. The more diligently you work at it, the more balanced, strong and flexible your natural voice and, given those properties uniquely your own, the wider the choices of music open to you. This book offers a vehicle for understanding your voice and becoming the best shower singer that you can imagine or achieving stardom in the opera house and all local stops in between. It's about you.

Late nineteenth-century France was a nation undergoing an identity crisis: the uncertain infancy of the Third Republic and shifting alliances in the wake of the Franco-Prussian War forced France to interrogate the fundamental values and characteristics at the heart of its own national identity. Music was central to this national self-scrutiny. It comes as little surprise to us that Oriental fears, desires, and anxieties should be a fundamental part of this, but what has been overlooked to date is that Britain, too, provided a thinking space in the French musical world; it was often – surprisingly and paradoxically – represented through many of the same racialist terms and musical tropes as the Orient. However, at the same time, its shared history with France and the explosions of colonial rivalry between the two nations introduced an ever-present tension into this musical relationship. This book sheds light on this forgotten musical sphere through a rich variety of contemporary sources. It visits the café-concert and its tradition of ‘Englishing up’ with fake hair, mocking accents, and unflattering dances; it explores the reactions, both musical and physical, to British evangelical bands as they arrived in the streets of France and the colonies; it considers the French reception of, and fascination with, folk music from Ireland and Scotland; and it confronts the culture shock felt by French visitors to Britain as they witnessed British music-making for the first time. Throughout, it examines the ways in which this music allowed French society to grapple with the uncertainty of late nineteenth-century life, providing ordinary French citizens with a means of understanding and interrogating both the Franco-British relationship and French identity itself.

It's turn-of-the-century New York, a city bursting with new life as the old century's order makes way for the mercantile class. But in the Pinkerton household a nineteenth-century embarrassment remains. Alice Pinkerton. Alice isn't mad exactly, but she's not sane either. She is tolerated, free to wander about, free to accompany her family to tea parties - free to be treated like a simpleton. But in truth Alice's mind is razor sharp, honed by a restless imagination, years of reading and a profound contempt for her surroundings. Left alone to read, to think, she has devoured the world that brings her mind alive: Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Michelangelo, Whitman, Poe, they are her inspiration; Jane Eyre, Catherine Moreland, Desdemona her companions. As she moves through the witless world around her, observing its prejudices, its shallow culture and its vanity, it is society that prompts her observations, viewing all through the prism of the art that has sustained and nourished her lonely life.
