"The poems of T. D. Richards are compelling, poignant and thought provoking. Whether he is writing about his beloved cottonwoods, tasty Indiana tomatoes, or a blessed breeze that travels all the way from the Pacific to offer relief from Hoosier humidity, he treats words with care and a generous helping of sacred respect. No matter his subject- spirituality, hope and humor are usually present, or hovering just at the edge of the page." John Bowman, author of This Could be the House I Die In "T. D. Richards writes what he knows-whether it's an astute observation of the quirks and subtleties of nature, or a philosophical look at life and its ever-changing stages. With humor and intelligence, he shares his take on his world; sometimes bridging generations, and other times being radically in-the-moment. A wonderful compilation of poetry." Rita Spalding, visual artist and creator of The Poetry Series In this convincing, bittersweet collection of poems entitled This Side and That, T. D. Richards introduces you to characters normally hidden: a Cottonwood grove that embraces a willow tree, but can't help it stop crying; a Kilroy figure on a machine shop window that bids you goodnight; Aristotle drinking mead and reading poetry; and a cool breeze on a super-hot day that refreshes your body and sparks your imagination. Starting with a wonderfully crafted paradoxical choice that we all face the moment we wake in the morning, the journey takes us into the author's backyard and unforgettable stories from childhood and current relationships. Enter the surprising world of connections that the author shares with you. You will find that reading his poems is like trying to eat just one potato chip-be prepared to devour the whole bag. T. D. Richards is a freelance writer and poet. Born into a family of teachers, he has long been a caretaker of language, learning early that words not only mean something, they are something. His career has followed a path that enriched his understanding of "the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune." Richards has held several professional positions, including a warden in a state prison, a university professor, and a pastor of an inner-city congregation. He has aspired to celebrate the differences and similarities of people from all walks of life, and connects with the forces that exert power in their life decisions. Richards has turned to poetry to help record the privileges afforded him for a lifetime of observation, which now includes his backyard. In 2003, he was awarded Indiana's highest civilian honor: Sagamore of the Wabash. He lives with his wife, Carol, and their dog, Morgan, in central Indiana.

Have you ever done something stupid, dangerous or self-sabotaging just to get one over someone else? Most of us have. Simon McCarthy-Jones draws on psychology, current affairs, literature and genetics to illuminate – whether we admit it or not – our spiteful side. What is that part of us that secretly wants our friends to fail? Did Americans put Trump in the White House just to stick it to Hillary Clinton? And then there are the legion of stories about toxic behaviour in supermarkets and over the privet hedge, ramping up to incendiary divorces, vicious business practices, backbiting politics and scorched-earth terrorism. There’s a hopeful message too – the upside of our dark side. Spite can drive us forward, and Simon provides a fresh perspective on the concept by showing the evolutionary benefits of spite as a social leveller, an enabler of defiance, a wellspring of freedom and a vital weapon in our everyday armoury.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • BOOKER PRIZE NOMINEE • From the beloved Pulitzer Prize–winning author, a sparkling novel about misperception, second chances, and the sometimes elusive power of human connection. Micah Mortimer is a creature of habit. A self-employed tech expert, superintendent of his Baltimore apartment building, cautious to a fault behind the steering wheel, he seems content leading a steady, circumscribed life. But one day his routines are blown apart when his woman friend (he refuses to call anyone in her late thirties a "girlfriend") tells him she's facing eviction, and a teenager shows up at Micah's door claiming to be his son. These surprises, and the ways they throw Micah's meticulously organized life off-kilter, risk changing him forever. An intimate look into the heart and mind of a man who finds those around him just out of reach, and a funny, joyful, deeply compassionate story about seeing the world through new eyes, Redhead by the Side of the Road is a triumph, filled with Anne Tyler's signature wit and gimlet-eyed observation.

A Functional Grammar Of Gooniyandi written by William B. McGregor and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990-01-01 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This volume sets out to provide a comprehensive description of the grammar of Gooniyandi, a non-Pama-Nyungan language of the southern-central Kimberley region of Western Australia. It covers phonetics and phonology, word phrase and clause structure, and the semantics of closed-class grammatical items. The major focus is, however, on meaning: how do Gooniyandi speakers mean with and in their language. To this end, the theoretical framework of systemic functional grammar, particularly as elaborated in Halliday's recent work, is adopted. Certain refinements to the theory are proposed in order to better account for the Gooniyandi evidence. Of obvious importance to those studying Australian aboriginal languages, this work has an importance to a wider audience for its effective presentation of theory justification.
