Puerto Rican music in New York is given center stage in Ruth Glasser's original and lucid study. Exploring the relationship between the social history and forms of cultural expression of Puerto Ricans, she focuses on the years between the two world wars. Her material integrates the experiences of the mostly working-class Puerto Rican musicians who struggled to make a living during this period with those of their compatriots and the other ethnic groups with whom they shared the cultural landscape. Through recorded songs and live performances, Puerto Rican musicians were important representatives for the national consciousness of their compatriots on both sides of the ocean. Yet they also played with African-American and white jazz bands, Filipino or Italian-American orchestras, and with other Latinos. Glasser provides an understanding of the way musical subcultures could exist side by side or even as a part of the mainstream, and she demonstrates the complexities of cultural nationalism and cultural authenticity within the very practical realm of commercial music. Illuminating a neglected epoch of Puerto Rican life in America, Glasser shows how ethnic groups settling in the United States had choices that extended beyond either maintenance of their homeland traditions or assimilation into the dominant culture. Her knowledge of musical styles and performance enriches her analysis, and a discography offers a helpful addition to the text.

Excerpt from Your Flag and My Flag: Patriotic Addresses We furthermore state that we fully com prehend the meaning of true Americanism. It means that we recognize no king but Jus tice. We bow to no crown save Liberty. We have no Kaiser but our conscience. When we set foot on the shores of New York we ceased to be subjects; we became citizens. If any one would look down on the immi grant, he would have to despise the Pilgrim Fathers who came here in the Mayflower. He would have to belittle the pioneers who in all times and climes have blazed the trail of progress. I recall the pointed remark made recently in the United States Senate: A sponge never migrates; it is born and dies upon the same rock, but the game fish finds its way to the headwaters of every creek and river of the earth. Day before yesterday we were all foreigners; today we are all Americans. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "We all take our national anthem for granted. But it was not always so. In this book, New York Times reporter Irvin Molotsky tells the story behind the story and, in the process, reveals an important and little-known piece of our country's heritage. Molotsky brings both legendary and unknown events and figures to life - from the flag's seamstress to the military heroes of the War of 1812. He charts the events leading up to the war, and the far-reaching impact this obscure conflict has had on our national psyche. The Flag, the Poet, and the Song also uncovers the facts and fallacies surrounding the flag and the song, from the tremendous size of the flag to why we continue trying to sing our anthem to this day."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
