Conceived of as a way to commemorate Missouri’s bicentennial of statehood, this unique work presents the perspective of Gary Kremer, one of the Show-Me State’s foremost historians, as he ponders why history played out as it did over the course of the two centuries since Missouri’s admittance to the Union. In the writing of what is much more than a survey history, Kremer, himself a fifth-generation Missourian, infuses the narrative with his vast knowledge and personal experiences, even as he considers what being a Missourian has meant—across the many years and to this day—to all of the state’s people, and how the forces of history—time, place, race, gender, religion, and class—shaped people and determined their opportunities and choices, in turn creating collective experiences that draw upon the past in an attempt to make sense of the present and plan for the future. Key elements of the book include the centrality of race to the Missouri experience—from the time Missourians began to seek statehood in 1817 all the way up to the Black Lives Matter movement of the 21st century—as well as ongoing tensions created by the urban-rural divide and struggle to define the proper role of government in society.

Today the "land of promise" is a spark in the tinder dry atmosphere of Middle Eastern affairs. Events there continue to wield influence among peoples and in places well beyond the region itself. This raises for Christians the acute theological problem of how to relate to the "land of promise" today and in light of the land of the Bible. Our hope is that this volume of essays will contribute to a more informed and theologically coherent response to the "Land of Promise." It is offered here in the name of peace for all peoples in that place and among those who continue to look to her as a place of promise.

Promise, along with gift, is among the predominant metaphors for the Western Christian tradition to describe God's gracious actions. Being Promised argues that promise is itself a kind of gift exchange and analyzes the power, time, and place of God's promise. Gregory Walter offers a theological analysis of promise, anthropological and phenomenological reflection on gift exchange, and a critical appreciation of other theological appropriations of gift to support his argument. Walter clarifies the phenomenon of promise as gift and shows its theological, hermeneutical, and ethical significance. No other book theologically examines promise and gift exchange like this one does.

"[An] ambitious economic history of the united States...rich with details." ?—David Leonhardt, New York Times Book Review How did a weak collection of former British colonies become an industrial, financial, and military colossus? From the eighteenth to the twenty-first centuries, the American economy has been transformed by wave after wave of emerging technology: the steam engine, electricity, the internal combustion engine, computer technology. Yet technology-driven change leads to growing misalignment between an innovative economy and anachronistic legal and political structures until the gap is closed by the modernization of America's institutions—often amid upheavals such as the Civil War and Reconstruction and the Great Depression and World War II. When the U.S. economy has flourished, government and business, labor and universities, have worked together in a never-ending project of economic nation building. As the United States struggles to emerge from the Great Recession, Michael Lind clearly demonstrates that Americans, since the earliest days of the republic, have reinvented the American economy - and have the power to do so again.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians continues to raise fundamental issues and many questions about the land itself. Does modern Israel have a legitimate 'right' to occupy the land in the same way as Israel of the Old Testament? Were the promises about possession of the land made to Abraham to be 'for ever', and if not what has changed? What is the significance of the declaration of the State of Israel in 1948, and does Palestine remain 'a land without a people waiting for a people without a land', as some claim? This book will not answer fully all of these questions in the complex tangle surrounding the present conflict, but it sets out some major elements of biblical teaching about claims to this small territory in the Middle East. These claims continue to arouse passionate feelings and feed long held tensions within the whole region with tragic results for all concerned. It is argued here that the issue of the land cannot be seen in isolation, and needs to be viewed within the wider context of the teaching of the Bible as it relates to prophecies about Israel, and New Testament teaching about the 'last things'. Other issues considered relate to the current debate as to whether the Church replaces Israel in God's purposes, Dispensationalism, Christian Zionism, and the sensitive question - who is a Jew? The author also stresses the primary place and significance of the New Covenant, with the centrality of Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of all the Old Testament promises made to Israel as the key to understanding the 'land problem' today.
