Thom Puckey (Crayford, Engeland, 1948) is een van Nederlands bekendste beeldhouwers, die ook internationaal bekendheid geniet. Sinds 1979 is hij woonachtig in ons land, waar zijn kunstenaarschap evolueerde van performances, installaties en bronzen beelden naar marmeren sculpturen die sterk refereren aan classicistische beelden uit de 19e eeuw. Daarnaast realiseerde hij in ons land vele beelden in de openbare ruimte, waaronder het imposante Vesaliusbeeld te Terneuzen uit 2007. Puckey werkt sinds 2002 aan een lange serie naakten, die via levensgrote kleimodellen en gipsafgietsels uiteindelijk in Italië worden uitgevoerd in wit marmer. Het intensieve en langdurige werken naar levend model is voor hem een essentieel gegeven. Deze beelden van jonge vrouwen, vaak met wapens en in verschillende poses, roepen zeer uiteenlopende reacties op in de kunstwereld, zowel als bij het kunstpubliek.
