Neben seinem Hause lagen zwei oder drei kleine Weiler, welche von seinem Stamme bewohnt wurden. Die ganze von ihm regierte Btvolkerung ward aus nicht mehr als zweihundert Seelen geschatzt. Jn der Nahe dieser kleinen Dorser besand sich etwas Niederwald und einiges Weideland, aber ein wenig weiter den Engpass hinaus verschwanden alle Zeichen von Vevolkerung und Vegetation. Jn der galischen Mundart bedeutet Gleneoe Thranenschlucht, und in Wahrheit, dieser Engpass ist der traurigste und melancholischste unter allen schottischen Passen, das wahre Thal des Todesschattens Nebel und Sturme hausen uber demselben wahrend des grossern Theils der schonsten Sommermonate, und selbst an jenen seltenen Tagen, wenn keine Wolke am Himmel steht und die Sonne strahlt, macht die Landschast einen traurigen und surchterregenden Eindruck, Der Psad suhrt langs eines Baches, welcher aus dem sinstersten und schauerlichsten Bergse e entspringt. Hohe Felsen von nacktem Gestein drohen an beiden Seiten: selbst im Juli steht man hansig Streisen von Schnee in den Spalten der Bergspitzen. An den Seiten der Klippen, von der Kuppe bis zur Soble, zeigen Hanien von Trummern den sich ubersturzenden Laus der Giessbache. Eine Meile nach der andern sucht der Wanderer vergeblich nach dem Rauche einer Hutte, nach ein
