Thomasevangeliet er en del af de 13 papyrusskrifter med 52 religiøse og filosofiske tekster, der i 1945 blev fundet ved byen Nag Hammadi i Egypten. Den danske professor Søren Giversen oversatte som den første teksten i slutningen af 1950’erne. Siden har teksten, der menes at stamme fra omkring år 100, været genstand for intens interesse blandt historikere og teologer. Teksten i denne bog er en revideret udgave af Søren Giversens oprindelige oversættelse fra 1959. Søren Møller Giversen (1928-2009) var en dansk teolog og professor ved Aarhus Universitet i årene 1975-1998. Søren Giversen oversatte en række af de tidlige kristne tekster, der i 1945 blev fundet ved byen Nag Hammadi i Egypten, og hvoraf Thomas-evangeliet er det mest berømte. Udover oversættelserne af de koptiske tekster udgav han også flere bøger om Det Ny Testamentes tekster.

Thomasevangeliet er et af de apokryfe eller hemmelige evangelier, der ikke kom med i Det Ny Testamente. Det foreligger her i en nyoversat, kommenteret oversættelse. Thomasevangeliet adskiller sig fra evangelierne i Det Ny Testamente. Hvor de fremstår som egentlige fortællinger om Jesus fra Nazareth, om hans liv, gerning, død og opstandelse, udgør Thomasevangeliet med sine 114 visdomsord snarere en slags Jesusantologi. Og som “ordsprogsevangelium” er det enestående for sin genre. Det var i Egypten i 1945, at Thomasevangeliet blev fundet som en del af et større håndskriftsfund. Fundet har siden rejst en række spørgsmål af væsentlig betydning for vores forståelse af den ældste kristendom, spørgsmål som til stadighed er til debat. Thomasevangeliet og beslægtede apokryfe skrifter står ikke nødvendigvis i modstrid med det, der blev til de bibelske skrifter, men skal snarere ses som en reaktion på og en udlægning af den bibelske tradition. Skriftets betydning er uomtvistelig, for i det videreføres motiver og tankeforestillinger fra den ældste kristendom, som uden vores kendskab til denne tradition, ville være gået tabt.

In December 1945, at the base of cliffs that run along the Nile River near the modern-day town of Nag Hammadi, an Egyptian farmer discovered, in a sealed jar, thirteen ancient Coptic codices containing more than fifty separate tracts. This discovery represented arguably the most significant manuscript discovery of the twentieth century for the study of the New Testament and Christian origins. Of all the texts in this Nag Hammadi Library, none has been more celebrated than the Gospel of Thomas--a Gospel that has played a crucial role in the newly emerging view of early Christianity as a very diverse phenomenon and in the recent revival of historical Jesus studies. Now, after more than fifty years of study, the best text and the best translation of Thomas are presented here in user-friendly form by the Berlin Working Group for Coptic Gnostic Writings, with Stephen J. Patterson and James M. Robinson. In addition, two essays have been included for persons who may be unfamiliar with this new Gospel or with events that led to its discovery and publication. The first, by Patterson, is a general introduction to the Gospel of Thomas as it appears fifty years after its discovery. The second, by Robinson, tells the fascinating story of that discovery itself by one who was directly involved in bringing this new Gospel to light.
