Excerpt from The Russian Bolshevik Revolution This book is not written to make out a case, but to set forth what appear to be the significant facts. It is Offered on the theory that intelligent people are tired of being victims of propaganda about Russia and will welcome a book that is not trying to give their minds a certain twist. I can truthfully aver that when I set pen to paper I had no rigid mental attitudes toward the phases of the Russian revolution, so that such interpretations as I venture on have come out of my study of the facts themselves. Excerpt from Three Aspects of the Russian Revolution The five weeks that the Belgian Socialist Mission spent in Russia allowed of our seeing much and questioning many persons. We visited the Workmen's and Soldiers' Committees, as well as the Ministers, Social ists as well as Cadets. We met the represen tatives of all the different political opinions from Polish nationalists to the anarchists installed in the Villa Dournovo. In Petro grad, as in Moscow and Kieff, we saw the Labour Organizations, interviewed members of the Belgian colony and the leaders of Employers Associations. We came into contact with the masses - we must have spoken to at least a hundred thousand persons - as well as their leaders. We listened to the pessimists as well as to the optimists. We had an opportunity of observing the enormous difficulties existing in Russia to-day. But we never lost sight of the many reasons that, in spite of every thing, justified young democratic Russia's belief in her future. Excerpt from The Russian Revolution: The First Year The five cardinal points in the policy of the Union of Democratic Control are as follows:- To formulate, and organise support for, such a policy as shall lead to the establishment and maintenance of an enduring peace. For this purpose, to advocate the following points, and to take any other action which the Council of the Union of Democratic Control may, from time to time, declare to be in furtherance of such policy. 1. No Province shall be transferred from one Government to another without the consent, by plebiscite or otherwise, of the population of such province. 2. No Treaty, Arrangement, or Undertaking shall be entered upon in the name of Great Britain without the sanction of Parliament. Adequate machinery for ensuring democratic control of foreign policy shall be created. 3. The Foreign Policy of Great Britain shall not be aimed at creating Alliances for the purpose of maintaining the Balance of Power, but shall be directed to concerted action between the Powers, and the setting up of an International Council, whose deliberations and decisions shall be public, with such machinery for securing international agreement as shall be the guarantee of an abiding peace. 4. Great Britain shall propose as part of the Peace settlement a plan for the drastic reduction, by consent, of the armaments of all the belligerent Powers, and to facilitate that policy shall attempt to secure the general nationalisation of the manufacture of armaments, and the control of the export of armaments by one country to another. 5. - The European conflict shall not be continued by economic war after the military operations have ceased. British policy shall be directed towards promoting free commercial intercourse between all nations and the preservation and extension of the principle of the open door. Excerpt from Dawn in Russia: Or Scenes in the Russian Revolution I have not attempted in this book to do more than describe some of the scenes which I witnessed in Russia during the winter of I905 - Igo6, while I was acting there as special correspondent for the Daily Cbrouicle. For the most part, the descriptions are given in the same words which I wrote down at the time, either for my own memory or for the news paper. But the whole has been re-arranged and rewritten, while certain scenes have been added for which a daily paper has no room. I have also inserted between the scenes a bare outline of the principal events that were happening elsewhere, so that the Significance of what I saw may be more easily understood, and the dates become something better than mere numbers. 'It is my considered judgement that, had it had not been for the Russian Revolution, there would very likely have been no National Socialism; probably no Second World War and no decolonization; and certainly no Cold War, which once dominated our lives. I will attempt here to distill the essence of my books THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION and RUSSIA UNDER THE BOLSHEVIK REGIME by raising the three central questions addressed in those volumes: Why did tsarism fall? Why did the Bolsheviks gain power? Why did Stalin succeed Lenin? Richard Pipes, from THREE WHYS OF THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION. Arguably the most important event of the twentieth century, the Russian Revolution changed forever the course of modern history. Due to the Soviet clampdown on archives regarding the Revolution, many aspects of the event have been shrouded in mystery for over seventy years. However, since the collapse of Communism the archival despositories have been thrown open to interested parties. 'One of America's great histories'. WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD. Excerpt from From Liberty to Brestlitovsk: The First Year, of the Russian Revolution I have tried in this book to elucidate, as far as was in my power, the development of the fundamental ideas of the Socialist parties in the Russian Revolution and their reflection in the life of the masses. A revolution is a very complex thing, especially in such an immense country as Russia, with its large and varied population, and it goes without saying that, far from claiming to have described it exhaustively, I realise only too clearly that there are numbers of questions on which I have barely touched. Excerpt from Is the Russian Revolution a Bourgeois Revolution? A Keen Analysis of Situation in Soviet Russia In the revolution of 1789, and still more in the Revo lution of 1848, the working class of France together with the artisans who joined it, was already a growing and threatening power which clearly understood the conflict of proletarian and capitalist interests. These masses who were not yet united by industries on a large scale and who did not yet have a party which could unite them by an idea, these masses who fought with a confused idea of the Socialist Republic, were already the driving power and the leaders of the revolution. The defeat of these masses in June was the defeat of the revolution. The bourgeoisie did not develop the revolution after their victory; it was rather the workers who did it. The bour geoisie ended it and flocked to the standards of Napo leon III. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from War and Revolution in Russia, 1914-1917 IN the midst of profound peace, in the active work of economical and social reform, Russia, as by thunderbolt, was struck by the news of approaching mobilisation, and by the urgent necessity of having recourse to the sword to protect her interests and those of the other Slav nations. To define exactly the position in which the beginning of the war found Russia, it is necessary briefly to survey her political condition at the moment. The country was still feeling the disturbing effects of the Revolution of 1905 - 6. The intellectual classes which had now received access to and obtained a share in political life and legislation, were engrossed by the struggle with the Government. This tur moil centred specially in the Imperial Duma. With the opening of military action this internal strife of the parties, as in other European countries, and the striving for suprem acy between the Imperial Duma and the Government, died down at first, but later became gradually acute again. This, we observe, was the case with all our Allies and in a certain degree with our enemies. After three years of war, this struggle, becoming still more acute, brought about a crisis which ended in the Revolution of March 1917.
