Five unique short plays for television by one of America’s most celebrated playwrights. A 'Waitress in Yellowstone' (or: 'Always Tell the Truth') is a parable about an honest waitress and a corrupt congressman. In Bradford, a new police chief arriving in a small New England town is plunged into the midst of its cozy secrets and uncovers the truth behind his predecessor's mysterious fatal hunting accident. The Museum of Science and Industry Story is a fantasy about the adventures of a man locked in a museum overnight. A Wasted Weekend is a 1987 episode of Hill Street Blues focusing on four cops and their ill-fated hunting trip. In We Will Take You There, Danny and Mike, partners in an unusual “taxi service to the wilds,” offer themselves as guides to the most remote areas of the world. Displaying Mamet’s characteristic ear for language and unsettling moral vision, these plays are among his darkest, funniest, and most entertaining. Includes: 'A Waitress in Yellowstone' (or: 'Always Tell the Truth') 'Bradford' 'The Museum of Science and Industry Story' 'A Wasted Weekend' 'We Will Take You There'

This work examines the change from live to filmed television dramas during the period 1952-1958 and the characteristics and programs that are most associated with filmed television drama. Along with many technical changes that had to be made in the industry in order to convert live television to filmed television came an interesting social one. The American society in general was developing a growing interest in the lives of ordinary people, and television moved with them, offering more programs that concentrated on the middle and lower classes. Because of the inherent qualities of filming, television began to feature more documentary-like realism, began to broaden its interpretation of traditional romantic escapism to include more outer space and supernatural science fiction, began to better fulfill materialistic desires through well-designed, enjoyable commercials, and began to offer the best dramas and most popular personalities, often leading viewers to greater self-appreciation and richer lives. This work focuses on the important anthology programs and specials that were on the air from 1952 to 1958 such as Kraft Television Theatre, Philco Television Playhouse, and The Hallmark Hall of Fame, filmed serials like Colgate Theatre, Amos 'n' Andy, and I Love Lucy, and the challenges of converting from live to filmed television drama.

Composing Tv Drama written by Marco Ianniello and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-08-19 with Performing Arts categories.

In this book, Marco Ianniello investigates the complex art of television drama screenwriting, arguing that the screenplay itself, rather than the final product, is at the heart of the current success of the genre. Bridging a crucial gap between theory and practice through textual analyses of various case studies, Ianniello expands on television story structure theory and screenwriting practice by foregrounding story construction and character development in the serial drama. The development of these key frameworks – structure and character – will enable both screenwriting scholars and practitioners to better identify, assess, critique, and craft the complexities of the television drama screenplay.

The television set – the humble box in the corner of almost every British household – has brought about some of the biggest social changes in modern times. It gives us a window into the lives of people who are different from us: different classes, different races, different sexualities. And through this window, we've learnt that, perhaps, we're not so different after all. Playing Gay in the Golden Age of British TV looks at gay male representation on and off the small screen – from the programmes that hinted at homoeroticism to Mary Whitehouse's Clean Up TV campaign, and The Naked Civil Servant to the birth of Channel 4 as an exciting 'alternative' television channel. Here, acclaimed social historian Stephen Bourne tells the story of the innovation, experimentation, back-tracking and bravery that led British television to help change society for the better.

The Lisbon Traviata, is a powerfully moving tragicomedy about a crumbling homosexual marriage. And in Frankie and Johhnie in the Claire de Lune, a man and a woman, not young, not old, no great beauties, either one, come together in a fresh and witty display of emotional fireworks. McNally himself describes the final piece, the bitingly honest and uproariously funny It's Only a Play, as his attempt to describe what it was like to work in Broadway in the 1980s.
