This book provides design engineers using gas-liquid two-phase flow in different industrial applications the necessary fundamental understanding of the two-phase flow variables. Two-phase flow literature reports a plethora of correlations for determination of flow patterns, void fraction, two- phase pressure drop and non-boiling heat transfer correlations. However, the validity of a majority of these correlations is restricted over a narrow range of two -phase flow conditions. Consequently, it is quite a challenging task for the end user to select an appropriate correlation/model for the type of two-phase flow under consideration. Selection of a correct correlation also requires some fundamental understanding of the two-phase flow physics and the underlying principles/assumptions/limitations associated with these correlations. Thus, it is of significant interest for a design engineer to have knowledge of the flow patterns and their transitions and their influence on two-phase flow variables. To address some of these issues and facilitate selection of appropriate two-phase flow models, this volume presents a succinct review of the flow patterns, void fraction, pressure drop and non-boiling heat transfer phenomenon and recommend some of the well scrutinized modeling techniques.

Because of the importance of multiphase flows in a wide variety of industries, including power, petroleum, and numerous processing industries, an understanding of the behavior and underlying theoretical concepts of these systems is critical. Contributed by a team of prominent experts led by a specialist with more than thirty years of experience, the Multiphase Flow Handbook provides such an understanding, and much more. It covers all aspects of multiphase flows, from fundamentals to numerical methods and instrumentation. The book begins with an introduction to the fundamentals of particle/fluid/bubble interactions followed by gas/liquid flows and methods for calculating system parameters. It includes up-to-date information on practical industrial applications such as boiling and condensation, fluidized beds, aerosols, separation systems, pollution control, granular and porous media flow, pneumatic and slurry transport, and sprays. Coverage then turns to the most recent information on particle/droplet-fluid interactions, with a chapter devoted to microgravity and microscale flows and another on basic multiphase interactions. Rounding out the presentation, the authors discuss numerical methods, state-of-the art instrumentation, and advanced experimental techniques. Supplying up-to-date, authoritative information on all aspects of multiphase flows along with numerous problems and examples, the Multiphase Flow Handbook is the most complete reference available for understanding the flow of multiphase mixtures.

Abstract: The main objective of this study is to carry out a simplified analysis to predict radial distributions of the void fraction, interfacial area concentration, and bubble Sauter mean diameter for air-water two-phase flows in large-diameter pipes. In the analysis, one-dimensional two-group void fraction transport equations, i.e., gas-phase continuity equations, and interfacial area concentration transport equations were applied without considering the bubble coalescence and disintegration. It is expected that the predictions will not agree well with experimental data, and therefore, the study can demonstrate the importance of taking into account the bubble interactions to achieve an accurate prediction for two-phase flows. Experimental data from a previous study by Smith (Ph.D. thesis, 2002) were used to compare the predicted results. In the experiments, local measurements at three different elevations along the vertical flow direction were made to acquire data at various radial positions for air-water two-phase flows. In the experiments, two large-diameter round test sections were used, namely, 0.102 and 0.152 mm inner diameter. Measurements were taken with four-sensor conductivity probes to obtain local time-averaged void fraction, interfacial area concentration, bubble velocity, and bubble Sauter mean diameter for two groups of bubbles, namely, small bubble group (Group 1) and large bubble group (Group 2). In the analysis, in addition to neglecting the bubble interactions, it was further assumed that the bubble radial motion along the flow direction is negligible. Therefore, the data acquired at a specified radial location at the lowest measurement elevation were used as the boundary condition to predict the void fraction and interfacial area concentration at the same radial location at higher measurement elevations. These values are compared with the experimental values. It was concluded that changes in flow structures caused by bubble migration, coalescence and breakup are significant factors that prevent the simplified two-group interfacial area transport equations from accurately modeling two-phase flows. In order to accurately model interfacial area concentration in two-phase flows, bubble coalescence, radial bubble motion, and breakup have to be accounted for. In addition, a drift-flux analysis was also performed based on the experimental data to obtain the distribution parameters for the two pipe geometries. The comparison indicated that bubble radial motion, bubble coalescence and disintegration are essential to accurately model interfacial structures in air-water two-phase flows in large flow channels.
