"My dissertation consists of three essays on the political economy of foreign investments and international business. The first essay investigates the relationship between a country's level of democracy and its ability to attract foreign direct investment (FDI). According to a well-established finding in the literature, democratic countries can attract more FDI. However, I show that this positive association between democracy and FDI disappears once I control for a selection bias in which FDI tends to come from democratic countries in the first place. I then show that it is not democracy by itself but the level of political similarity between any two countries that affects their FDI flow. In other words, democracy does not attract FDI, political similarity does. The second essay looks into how well countries absorb foreign investments after they receive those investments. I find that FDI contributes less to economic growth in more democratic countries. This result survives a long series of robustness checks, and its substantive effect is considerably larger than those of several other factors that affect growth, including market size, trade openness, development level, and inflation. While the first two essays are empirical in nature and primarily deal with politics at the macro level (i.e., between countries), the third essay is a theoretical study ofthe strategic interaction between micro-level actors (i.e., firms, activist groups) and their governments. It is, to my knowledge, the first game-theoretic model of private politics - a relatively young field - that focuses on the international dimension. I find that activist campaigns in democratic and nondemocratic countries have different characteristics due to the nature of the competition between firms and activist groups. Counterintuitively, I find that even if governments have pure economic motives - i.e., they only care about gaining investments for their countries?there still does not exist a "race to the bottom" in equilibrium, as commonly expected. Finally, I propose a novel answer to the perennial question in political science of why there is so "little" lobbying money in politics, which differs from previous explanations in that mine is the first one that is based on a competition dynamic."--Pages vi-vii.

Chapter 3 explores the effects of financial development in the FDI host country on multinational sales activity. Using data on US multinational activity abroad, we find that stronger host country financial development tends to lower the share of affiliate sales that remain in the local market, while increasing the share of sales to third-country destinations. We provide a three-country model with heterogeneous firms to rationalize these observations: Host countries with better financial development foster entry by domestic firms, resulting in a more competitive local market. This leads multinationals to orient their operations away from horizontal sales to the local market, towards export-platform sales to third-country markets instead.

The essays of this book are contributions to the empirical Literature in International Trade and Public Economics. They deal with the relationship between the structure and quality of the public sector and the process of economic integration. Two of the essays add to the empirical determinants of trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) and to the numerous applications of the theory of government decentralization. Decentralization tends to discourage inward FDI and domestic trade and to increase imports and exports. A third essay focuses on the effect of governments' intangible assets - such as consumer perceptions about countries and products from these countries - on FDI. A country's nation brand is shown to have a significant and large positive effect on investment flows.

The main objective of this dissertation is to study effects of trade policy such as tariffs and subsidy, and foreign direct investments (FDIs) on the performance of domestic and global economies. The first two essays, Chapters 2 and 3, consider the endogenous growth model of North-South trade with quality ladders. The third essay, Chapter 4, studies effects of FDIs on international R & D spillovers. In Chapter 1, we state the aims and scopes of this dissertation and review the related literature. In Chapter 2, we analyze the steady state effect of tariff imposition in a dynamic general equilibrium model of North-South trade with scale invariant growth, developed by Segerstrom and Dinopoulos (2004). Assuming that each government uses tariff revenue to subsidize domestic R & D, we show that tariff imposition of the South leads to a higher imitation rate (in the South), faster technological change (or quality improvement) in the world, industry shift from the North to the South, and lower wage inequality between the North and the South. In Chapter 3, we study steady state effects of FDIs and globalization in a dynamic general equilibrium model of North-South Trade with scale invariant growth. We define FDI as movement of production base from the North to the South by a northern firm. Here, the incentive of FDI decision is to lower production cost. We define globalization as an increase in the southern population. Our numerical example shows that globalization leads to less copying of Northern products, a faster technological change, more industry shift from the North to the South through an increase in the number of multinational firms, and a larger wage inequality between the North and the South. In Chapter 4, we test the effects FDI on total factor productivity using more recent and more extensive data set than in Lichtenberg and Potterie (2001). We distinguish two patterns of FDI, one is FDI from a developed country to another developed country and the other is FDI from a developed country to a developing country. We summarize the results in Chapter 5. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

The first study is about the effect of institutions on the realization of foreign direct investment (FDI), and the second study examines the role of Hong Kong as the export intermediaries for China's export. In the first study, we empirically examine the determinants for the breach of ex ante contracted FDI using a unique firm-level data set of foreign invested enterprises in China. We find that both the institutional quality of China's various regions as well as that of FDI sourcing countries have significant impacts on the fulfillment rate of ex ante contracted FDI. In the second study, we use China's Custom data to analyze the factors affecting the share of China's indirect exports routing through Hong Kong, and explore the reasons that account for the declining role of Hong Kong in China's export. We find evidence that Hong Kong plays a greater role when regions are geographically closer to Hong Kong yet poorer in institutional quality, or when destination countries are further away and have more complicated importing documents. It has an advantage in helping China export differentiated products rather than homogenous goods, whereas has no advantage in helping export China's new products. We find that the reallocation of China's export across regions, products and firm types contributes to the decrease of Hong Kong's role as China's export intermediary. We also find that firms with higher productivity or higher increase in productivity would be more likely to export directly rather than export through Hong Kong.
