Digital technologies' emergence has changed firms' innovation and entrepreneurship activities significantly. While the prior literature has investigated how digital technologies stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship, the challenges of the digital transformation process have received limited attention in the information systems (IS) literature. This dissertation aims to examine these challenges by studying policies and governance in the fields of intellectual property, data privacy, and digital infrastructure. In the first essay, I argue that the inefficient protection of employees' intellectual property rights hampers their innovation activities at work. The second essay evaluates data privacy regulations' impact on mobile app entrepreneurship. The third essay investigates how mobile platforms' open policy impedes the adoption of innovative features in operating system (OS) updates. These three essays provide theoretical contributions to the literature on digital transformation, innovation, and entrepreneurship. They also offer practical insights for policymakers and digital infrastructure professionals about how to address digital transformation challenges in innovation and entrepreneurship.

Technological innovation, knowledge diffusion and employee entrepreneurship and mobility are closely related phenomena. Multiple literature streams in strategy, entrepreneurship and technology management focus on explaining them. However, relatively little is known about the micro-level variation in technological tasks as their driver. To improve our understanding of the role technology plays in these phenomena, I examine how the complexity of the technological problems that employees solve affects innovation performance and employees0́9 choices about entrepreneurship and mobility. In essay 1 I examine whether modeling the innovative process as an iterative and adaptive search of boundedly rational agents is a valid approach. I develop a novel measure of technological complexity and empirically analyze how technological complexity affects innovation performance. In essay 2 I develop a model connecting attributes of technological tasks with the probability of idea rejection within incumbent firms. I show that rejection of profitable ideas within incumbent firms may occur without asymmetric information, incomplete contracts or resource constraints. In essay 3 I look at how technological complexity affects decisions to engage in employee entrepreneurship and mobility within the context of the U.S. semiconductor industry. The dissertation highlights a new driver of innovation patterns, knowledge flows and employee entrepreneurship and mobility with implications for firm performance and competitive dynamics.

This dissertation consists of three essays. In Essay One, I question the conventional wisdom that economic transactions are governed either by the price mechanism or by the authority of the firm. I argue that the exchange of information and knowledge for innovative production does not totally conform to such alternatives of governance. I term such exchanges hidden transactions. Since innovative production takes place inside the mind, individual entrepreneurship is the fundamental force that initializes hidden transactions. Institutional factors that enhance hidden transactions are important. In Essay Two I consider two types of entrepreneurship, conceiving entrepreneurship and performing entrepreneurship, and argue that while conceiving entrepreneurship is largely unobservable performing entrepreneurship can be measured. A confirmatory factor analysis under latent variable modeling is proposed and multiple indicators are used to manifest performing technology entrepreneurship. Results show that the proposed model is plausible. In Essay Three, I argue that the performing entrepreneurship of a region depends on the entrepreneur's regional opportunity set. Four components of the opportunity set include the availability of strategic resources, the ease of combining resources, the ease of founding a firm, and the security of doing business. The OLS model results indicate that R & D investment, anchor firms, appropriate government size, and intellectual property law are important elements of these components.

The first essay develops a typology that identifies the multiple pathways, functions and operations where innovation can occur in a firm's internal business cycle based upon the extant literature that includes both technological and non-technological activities. This is an important step toward developing a comprehensive strategy for a regional economy and provides a common platform for the discussion of innovation among academics and practitioners. The typology adds to the existing knowledge of how innovation works in organizations by describing the pathways, business functions and operations in a firm's internal-business-process; the business strategies used to advance innovation to the market; and the market impact that innovation has in a regional economy. The typology is enhanced by the different threads of literature - innovation, technology, organization and marketing. The integrated approach allows academics and practitioners to understand how and where innovation occurs in firms and lays the foundation for robust metrics of the behavioral relationship between variables under study. The result is a set of assessment tools that permits diagnostics of the firm, industry, market and region. The second essay examines the relationship between innovation, emerging technologies, business firms' investment structure, and specialized types of private equity used to finance emerging technologies. A conceptual framework is developed for financial investment and a set of hypotheses tested for investment between Ohio and U.S. firms. Ohio firms take a different investing approach than U.S. firms when investing in a firm's stage of business development but are not significantly different when using specialized types of financing, investing in industry/technology niches, and investing in geographic markets. The third essay explores the role of innovation in business firms. The essay examines the reasons firms invest in innovation and then test the difference in the innovation behavior of firms. Descriptive analysis is performed in differences in the way firms engage in innovation, their preferred means of pursuing product innovation, and the reasons for engaging in product innovation. Hypotheses tests on the influence of innovation on firms' financial performance follows, as do the tests on differences in firms' contribution to the regional economy. The t-tests of the difference in means in six dimensions of economic impact performance confirm that innovative small to mid-sized firms have greater impacts on their regional economies than do their non-innovative peers.

Drawing on the lean startup model, network theory, institutional theory, learning theory, and symbiosis view, this dissertation examines three important issues of entrepreneurship. This dissertation consists of three essays, each focusing on one specific aspect of entrepreneurship, namely: stage, network, and subsidiary initiative. Based on the lean startup model, the first essay focuses on the development processes of startups and the dominant cognition an entrepreneur might use at each stage. The second essay proposes an appropriateness perspective to examine the optimal configuration of network characteristics, learning experience, and legal environment that is most conducive to innovation performance. The third essay focuses on the relationship between informal institutional distance and subsidiary initiatives, investigating how the trust between headquarters and subsidiary mediates the relationship and how communication effectiveness moderates such relationship. As a whole, these three essays address important questions of entrepreneurship at different levels.
