This is a 3 essay dissertation on trade, exchange rate and development in Africa. The first chapter examines the extent to which financial development and trade openness mediate the impact of exchange rate regimes on productivity and growth. The empirical evidence on the relationship between exchange rate flexibility and growth in developing economies is mixed. Arguably, this relationship depends on the underlying characteristics of an economy, often overlooked in studies of the impact of exchange rate regime choice. The chapter investigates and estimates the relationship between exchange rate regimes and growth in Africa across the distribution of the level of financial development and trade openness. I find that exchange rate flexibility has a negative effect on growth. Greater financial development and trade openness; however, enhance the potential benefits of flexible regimes, and hence lessens the negative growth effect. The second chapter examines the impact of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) for Sub-Saharan African countries. The objectives in this chapter are two fold. First, it evaluates the total trade creation impact of AGOA using synthetic control method (SCM); a quasi-experimental approach that addresses limitations in existing empirical approaches to examining the impact of preferential trade agreements (PTAs). Second, it explores possible determinants of the variations in the estimated impact across countries and review the underlying mechanisms driving the variations. The main finding is that most countries registered gains in exports due to AGOA. The results, however were varied and export gains were largely unsteady. The variation in the impacts is largely explained by infrastructure, institutions of legal frameworks, ease of labor market regulations and the macroeconomic environment including stable exchange rates and low inflation. Using new data on global value chains (GVC) of textile and apparel associated with AGOA exports, the third chapter examines the role of rules of origin in restricting domestic value addition in exports and; hence industrialization in sub-Saharan Africa. Though there is a lot of evidence, albeit mixed, on how PTAs such as AGOA affect aggregate exports, evidence on whether the preferential market access leads to the dynamic benefits of growth is still contentious. Countries who benefit from the 'Special Rule for Apparel' under AGOA with liberal rules of origin registered significant increases in textile exports. But, the foreign value added content of their exports increased significantly following AGOA. This raises questions about the realization of the dynamic growth returns from exporting following AGOA, accompanied by liberal rules of origin.

This thesis is composed of a set of research in applied economics that enroll in the contemporary field of economics of biodiversity. The thesis focuses specifically on the links between economic development, local welfare and biodiversity conservation in sub-Saharan Africa region. An introductory chapter presents the subject of the thesis as well as the research field and situates our contribution. The rest of the thesis is composed of two parts divided into macroeconomic studies and case studies. Part 1 (composed of chapter 2 and chapter 3) addresses the link biodiversity and development under a macroeconomic perspective by taking into account spatial interactions between countries. In chapter 2, we examine the impact of development in sub-Saharan Africa on biodiversity using recent indicators on threatened species. In chapter 3, we focus on the mechanisms that support public conservation policies in Sub-Saharan Africa and tested the effect of tourism, environmental aid and spillover effects on conservation effort. Part 2 (composed of chapter 4 and chapter 5) presents two case studies in Ivory Coast. Chapter 4 presents a cost benefit analysis using contingent valuation and market price method. It evaluates the costs and benefits of conservation for local populations. In chapter 5 we examine people's preferences for conservation and identify key factors that determine local preferences. In the last chapter we draw implications of results and present potential extensions of this thesis.

This dissertation explores solidarity arrangements inherent in developing countries, where financial markets and formal social protection are lacking. Its main objective is to understand better two informal solidarity mechanisms, which represent significant habits for some households. This dissertation, therefore, focuses on informal transfers and child fostering. Specifically, it addresses issues of redistributive pressure and the treatment of foster children in their host households. It is a collection of three essays indevelopment economics. The first chapter aims to advance the understanding of economic research on redistributive pressure by proposing a conceptual framework that provides new tools for measuring such pressure. The second chapter assesses the financial cost of this redistributive pressure for households and its micro-economic correlates using recent household survey data from Côte d'Ivoire. Finally, the third chapter tests the consumption equality hypothesis between foster children and their host siblings using representative data from Côte d'Ivoire.

The overall objective of this thesis is to analyze the determinants and welfare effects of changes in agricultural productivity, rural population size and exposure to weather shocks in developing nations. The thesis is organized in three chapters. Chapter 1 analyzes the welfare and distributional effects of large dams in Sub Saharan Africa. The empirical strategy exploits the fact that, in Africa, a substantial number of dam construction was preceded by the establishment of international river basin treaties and authorities which dealt with the management of water resources and encouraged the construction of dams. Exploiting this policy context, this chapter develops an instrumental variable strategy using differences in suitability for dam(explained by differences in river gradients) between river basins within the same treaty basin to address the endogeneity of dam location. The results show that in river basins where a dam is built children are shorter and weigh less. These negative effects are amplified by recent adverse rainfall shocks. In river basins located downstream from a dam, child height and weight improve significantly. These gains are smaller when recent rainfall realizations were low. Taken together the findings demonstrate that dam construction in Sub-Saharan Africa clearly creates losers and winners showing the scope for more effective policymaking in order to capture the benefits from investing in large dam while compensating those who would lose. An interesting area for future research is to analyze whether and how institutional quality could alleviate the unequal distribution of the costs and benefits of dam construction in Sub Saharan Africa. Chapter 2 investigates how rural out-migration affects rural labor markets in developing countries. This question is of great importance given the role rural-urban and rural-rural population movements play in the process of structural transformation and economic development. As the Agricultural sector shrinks, workers leave rural areas for manufacturing and services jobs in cities. How does this process affect rural labor markets and the welfare of those who remain in rural areas? This paper examines this question empirically by investigating the effect of rural out-migration on rural wages using Brazilian population censuses from 1980 to 2000. I develop an approach for estimating the effect of rural out-migration on rural wages using the evidence that rural out-migration rates are different across cohorts of workers and that these differences change over time. The results indicate that a 10 percent increase in rural out-migration raises rural wages by 1 to 5 percent. This result suggests that rural out-migration flows in Brazil between 1991 and 2000 have increased wages by 3 to 6.5\%. In chapter 3 I analyze the short-run and medium-run consequences of agricultural shocks on human capital accumulation using data from Zambia. Because of their large dependence on rain-fed agriculture, a large proportion of households in developing countries are particularly vulnerable to rainfall shocks. Moreover, the usual mechanisms for smoothing income or consumption(credit and insurance) may be missing or limited in such economies. Households' inability to transfer resources across time and state of the nature may lead them to adopt coping strategies that are detrimental to asset and human capital accumulation. Using data collected around two periods of drought in Southern Africa, I examine whether exposure to agricultural shocks affects schooling and whether these effects persist or diminish over time. I find that exposure to the droughts reduced enrollment rates by 10 percentage points and years of schooling by 8 percentage points in the short-run. I also find some evidence of partial catch-up in the medium-run which suggests that children exposed to the drought remained in school at older ages. These findings have important policy implications. They suggest that technologies to reduce rainfall shocks and safety nets may have large benefits in reducing delays and increasing the rate of human capital accumulation. Moreover education policies should target regions and individuals exposed to agricultural or income shocks in order to limit drops in enrollment rates and facilitate the return of students who temporarily left school.

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) should not be defined by the structural parameters and opportunities of low-income countries, given that it also comprises a number of higher-income countries. This book finds that SSA is tightly constrained in its growth, employment and poverty outcomes. Rather than taking this as a conceptual downside, these constraints to growth and development have to be recognised and overcome—not just by a few countries able to escape them more easily, but by all countries in SSA, such that no country is left behind. The book observes a weakness in the quantum of growth in SSA. It relates this to a growth path based more on extractives than manufactured goods. While SSA is endowed with extractives, global demand for these is very volatile. These boom-bust cycles in export demand come to affect not just the export sector in SSA as a resource curse, but also the production of output of the entire economy. The book captures this through the working out of equilibrium in four major markets: the tradeables market, the domestic goods market, the labour market, and the money market.
