This dissertation explores the effect of corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices on the firm and contributes to an understanding of how CSR practices can contribute to companies' competitive advantage. In Chapter 1, I use three randomized field experiments implemented in online labor marketplaces to provide causal evidence of the effect of CSR on employee outcomes that have been shown to be critical to firm performance: salary requirements and employee performance. Workers were recruited for short-term jobs and I manipulated whether or not they received information about the employer's CSR program. I then observed the payment workers were willing to accept for the job and their performance on the job. Surveys administered at the end of the experiments gauging workers' perceptions about the received CSR information also provide insight into the distinct mechanisms through which CSR affects the different employee outcomes. This paper contributes to an understanding of how CSR adds value to the firm and highlights the role of the employee in explaining this relationship. It also demonstrates how online labor markets can be used as settings for field experimental research in strategic management more broadly. In Chapter 2, we examine pro bono work in the legal services industry. Using a screening model we show that law firms use pro bono engagements to gain information about associates' expected productivity as an equity partner. Using a dataset of the top 200 US law firms in 2010 we demonstrate empirical support for our model's predictions. Our findings thus suggest that the conventional wisdom that CSR practices are used to provide information about the quality of the firm to the employee is backwards; rather, we find that pro bono engagements are used to provide information about the quality of the employee to the firm. In Chapter 3, we explore what drives firms to combine poor environmental performance with communication about positive environmental performance, resulting in "greenwashing". Although some explanation of firm greenwashing has been put forth, a comprehensive analysis of the determinants of firm greenwashing is lacking. Drawing from existing work in management, strategy, sociology and psychology, we propose a comprehensive framework that examines the external (both institutional and market), organizational and individual drivers of greenwashing and then use this framework to develop recommendations for managers, policymakers, and NGOs to decrease greenwashing.

My findings point to a world in which the ratings business is primarily catering to a large group of trusting investors who buy ratings not for the value of information but for the value of institutional certification. The third essay examines the ratings of a recently emerged rating agency competitor and find its ratings are of no better predictive quality. I introduce a novel set of measures, `corporate badness (CB) ratings', for corporate environmental and social performance. In contrast to the leading commercial ratings, worse CB ratings correctly predict more future corporate bad behavior out-of-sample. These CB ratings provide a way to study ratings disagreement, which can be used to disentangle greenwashing from the other information contained in the leading commercial CSR ratings.

In three essays, I examine several facets of corporate social responsibility (CSR). Essay 1 (chapter 1) proposes that alliance network structures can have an effect on the CSR performance of firms. Further, the gender and inside/outside status of directors are also shown to be extremely relevant to the CSR performance of a firm. Overall, essay 1 demonstrates how a variety of factors can influence the CSR output of a firm. Essay 2 (chapter 2) examines pollution as a strategic choice. Given that firms choose to pollute at a given level, I examine how that choice influences the level of CSR in other, non-environmental dimensions by the same firm. Competing hypotheses (both predicting a curvilinear relationship) are tested. The results demonstrate that firms that pollute significantly more or less than the norm are likely to do less non-environmental CSR than firms that pollute closer to the average. Overall this essay contributes by specifying pollution as a strategic choice, and demonstrates how that choice can influence other CSR choices. Finally, essay 3 (chapter 3) examines the phenomenon known as forced ranking in firms. CSR, broadly defined, does examine employee relations. While factors examined are usually employee ownership, etc., an argument could be made to include other HR policies that affect employee morale and cooperation (such as forced ranking). A theoretical essay, this essay proposes three possible responses by managers to being placed under a forced ranking regime, with the majority of those responses classifiable as unintended consequences for firms. Further effects are examined by discussing the effect of these choices on team mental models. This essay contributes by examining the possible unintended consequences to firms by implementing forced ranking, most prominently the potential introduction of managerial deviance.

The paper concludes that the relationship between social and financial value creation is more complex than previously thought.

There is growing evidence that a vast majority of CEO's believe that sustainability-related issues are having or will soon have a material impact on their firms. Nearly all of the academic literature on the firm level impacts of corporate social performance (CSP) has focused on looking for a universally positive or negative effect of CSP on corporate financial performance (CFP). Recent literature in the CSP domain, however, has presented two questions that have been under-researched with respect to CSP by firms: 1) What are the processes and motivations that underlie the inclusion of CSP in firm strategic decisions? and 2) Why do some firms generate different market returns from their CSP? The present research consists of two studies that focus on developing an understanding of these two questions. The first study uses a Contingency Theory approach and proposes that several organizational, market, customer, environmental and competitive characteristics of a firm predict a firm's level of CSP. Findings based on a longitudinal, multi-industry sample of 447 firms over the period from 2000 to 2007 show that firms that have a corporate branding strategy, serve consumer markets, and have a greater degree of globalization have higher levels of CSP. Finally, this study also finds that higher levels of CSP relative to a firm's industry result in higher levels of firm intangible value (Tobin's q). The second study examines the following: 1) Does CSP history moderate the relationship between CSP and CFP? and 2) Is there a CSR Black Hole with respect to a firm's history of negative behaviors? That is, does past negative social performance of the firm negate potential benefits from current period changes in positive social performance? Using the Flow Signals framework proposed by Dekinder and Kohli (2008), this study finds that a (1) history of growth in negative CSP, (2) trend toward increasing negative CSP, or (3) more inconsistent history of positive or negative CSP (reversals) decrease the returns to positive social performance. This study also finds evidence of a CSR Black Hole, but show that firms may be able to exit this by consistently managing their social performance over time.

What is the role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in business strategy? More specifically, how does CSR engagement influence firms’ strategic behaviors? While the idea of CSR has started gaining traction back in the 1960s, the dominant line of inquiry tends to focus on providing justifications for CSR activities. The rapid changes in technology along with the continuous push toward globalization over the last thirty years have not only brought the world closer together but have also changed the basic fabric of our socio-institutional conditions. The firms in the modern society can no longer claim that they only have the fiduciary duty to the shareholders. Indeed, social and institutional stakeholders have increasingly demanded the firms to not only meet their economic objectives but also to satisfy other socio-institutional expectations including CSR engagement. Thus, CSR activities may influence not only the firms’ relationships with the external environment but also the internal organizational environment. Such influence may have profound impact on the firms’ strategic behaviors; yet our understanding is rather cursory. Endeavoring to join this scholarly discourse, this dissertation includes three separate essays that explore the strategic drivers and consequences of CSR engagement. Specifically, the first essay (Chapter 1) examines the influence of CSR engagement on internal corporate governance practices by asking the question: Are socially responsible firms more likely to appoint woman and minority CEOs? The second essay (Chapter 2) expands the scope of inquiry by investigating whether differences in stakeholder orientation as reflected in differences in CSR engagement between alliance partners may reduce the effectiveness of alliances as a value creation strategy. Lastly, the third essay (Chapter 3) explores how firms in different institutional environments (the United States vs. China) may choose diverging paths in using CSR engagement to ensure continuing collaboration of critical stakeholders. Taken together, these essays contribute to a better understanding of how CSR engagement may influence firm strategic behaviors as well as the changing roles and expectations of the firms in modern society.
