This stunning, glamorously designed survey highlights the artistry, expertise, and inspiration behind the work of today’s most fascinating and influential jewelry designers. Breaking out of the rarified world associated with fine jewelry is a set of contemporary designers who combine traditional skills with fresh vision, transforming artistic inspiration into wearable art. Boundless creativity and a sense of playfulness distinguish these jewelers from the pack, skills that result in pieces that are breathtakingly sophisticated and deeply rooted in each designer’s singular aesthetic. Focusing on seventeen modern masters from around the world, Jeweler reveals the unique ideas, intricate processes, and inspiration that go into their work. Curated by Stellene Volandes, editor-in-chief of Town & Country, Jeweler introduces readers to designers like the Hemmerles, a jewelry dynasty known for molding materials like copper and aluminum into one-of-a-kind collectibles; Wallace Chan, the Hong Kong wizard of stones whose patented techniques dazzle the mind as well as the wearer; Elena Votsi, an Athens jeweler who remade the Olympic medal, and whose bold metallic pieces are like wearable sculptures; and Lauren Adriana, a London wunderkind poised to become the master of her generation. Through Volandes’s vivid profiles and breathtaking images of each jeweler’s work, readers are immersed in the passion and craft that make each one a visionary. Jeweler is a stunning portrait of this fascinating niche of design, anointing the designers of today who are making the collectibles of the future.

Contrary to earlier views of preindustrial Europe as an essentially sedentary society, research over the past decades has amply demonstrated that migration was a pervasive characteristic of early modern Europe. In this volume, the theme of urban migration is explored through a series of historical contexts, journeying from sixteenth-century Antwerp, Ulm, Lille and Valenciennes, through seventeenth-century Berlin, Milan and Rome, to eighteenth-century Strasbourg, Trieste, Paris and London. Each chapter demonstrates how the presence of diverse and often temporary groups of migrants was a core feature of everyday urban life, which left important marks on the demographic, economic, social, political, and cultural characteristics of individual cities. The collection focuses on the interventions by urban authorities and institutions in a wide-ranging set of domains, as they sought to stimulate, channel and control the newcomers' movements and activities within the cities and across the cities' borders. While striving for a broad geographical and chronological coverage in a comparative perspective, the volume aims to enhance our insight into the different factors that shaped urban migration policies in different European settings west of the Elbe. By laying bare the complex interactions of actors, interests, conflicts, and negotiations involved in the regulation of migration, the case studies shed light on the interrelations between burghership, guilds, relief arrangements, and police in the incorporation of newcomers and in shaping the shifting boundaries between wanted and unwanted migrants. By relating to a common analytical framework, presented in the introductory chapter, they engage in a comparative discussion that allows for the formulation of general insights and the identification of long term transformations that transcend the time and place specificities of the case studies in question. The introduction and final chapters connect insights derived from the individual case-study chapters to present wide ranging conclusions that resonate with both historical and present-day debates on migration.

Twentieth Century Jewellery written by Alba Cappellieri and has been published by Skira Editore this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with Antiques & Collectibles categories.

The most diverse anthology on jewellery, supported by technical information and a concise, authoritative and stimulating essay. The third Skira monograph dedicated to the modern decorative arts, following Italian Art Ceramics 1900-1950 and Twentieth-century Fabrics is an analysis of some 350 jewels by artists and designers operating in Europe and the United States from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day. The work is organised chronologically, beginning with jewellery designed in the Art Nouveau period by leading figures such as Lalique and Fouquet; works produced during the Secession (in Berlin, Munich, and Vienna) by artists such as Moser and Hoffmann; splendid art deco pieces, with a look at great names such as Cartier, Boucheron, Buccellati, Cleef & Arpels and Tiffany; a study of European and American production from the 1950s; the influences of the informal artistic culture; the use of new materials and new techniques and current influences deriving from extra-European cultures and computer-driven means of expression. The spotlight is on leading art and design figures, and the working methods and styles of the most famous production houses throughout the course of the twentieth century. Key Sales Information * Outstanding photographs illustrate and illuminate examples of elaborate techniques and very original materials. * Eight sections in chronological order, with European and American objects.
