What is the best way to discuss the intersection of philosophy, poetry and art? For George Santayana it was to highlight the greatest qualities of each poet and explain how one compliments the other. This is Santayana's approach in Three Philosophical Poets: Lucretius, Dante, and Goethe. "The sole advantage in possessing great works of literature lies in what they can help us to become." So begins Santayana's analysis of the three heroes of the book. Three Philosophical Poets: Lucretius, Dante, and Goethe is a collection of six lectures "with a few additions" read in February, 1910, and they are based on one of Santayana's courses at Columbia University. He begins with an examination of Lucretius and his foundation in naturalism, materialism and in humanism in ethics. A thousand years later Dante arrived, bringing with him awareness of supernaturalism, or God. Still later came Goethe, whose Romanticism expanded on Lucretius and Dante. Santayana's love for the poets is infectious. Rather than painstakingly examining each line and then connecting it to dry philosophical tomes, Santayana quotes the best passages, explaining what makes them great. He seems to be delighted by each poem, almost as if it is a brand new discovery. Santayana's discourse on the various episodes of Faust is essential reading. He relates each one in an entertaining manner, making the reader feel as if he or she is in the midst of a good conversation. By connecting the three poets, Santayana helps readers gain insight into their poems but also into the nature of philosophy itself. Readers will find meaning in Three Philosophical Poets: Lucretius, Dante, and Goethe. This book will encourage readers to revisit the three poets with fresh eyes. It is a vital companion for rereading three great poets of the Western world. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. “I am no specialist in the study of Lucretius; I am not a Dante scholar nor a Goethe scholar….My excuse for writing about them, notwithstanding, is merely the human excuse which every new poet has for writing about the spring. They have attracted me; they have moved me to reflection; they have revealed to me certain aspects of nature and of philosophy which I am prompted by mere sincerity to express, if anybody seems interested or willing to listen.” The modesty exhibited in the above disclaimer—from Santayana’s preface to Three Philosophical Poets—should be viewed in the context of the author’s extraordinary impact as a philosopher and teacher. The Sense of Beauty has claim to being the first major work on aesthetics written in the United States; the multivolume The Life of Reason is arguably the first extended analysis of pragmatism anywhere. Among Santayana’s many well-known Harvard students, Wallace Stevens has acknowledged a clear debt to his work. Based on a course Santayana taught at Harvard, Three Philosophical Poets was first delivered to the public as a series of lectures at Columbia University in 1910. Santayana’s lifelong, learned meditation on the relationship between philosophy and art is apparent. (Santayana’s own prose style has long been considered among the most eloquent in all of philosophy.) Here, he discusses the chief phases of European philosophy—naturalism, supernaturalism, and romanticism—as they are set forth and epitomized by the works of Lucretius, Dante, and Goethe, respectively. Praise for Three Philosophical Poets and its author “[A] brilliant and admirable little book.” —T. S. Eliot “The exquisite and memorable way in which he has always said things has given so much delight that we accept what he says as we accept our own civilization. His pages are part of the douceur de vivre.” —Wallace Stevens “Santayana was the real excitement for me at Harvard, especially Three PhilosophicalPoets….It really fixed my view of what poetry should ultimately be.” —Conrad Aiken

Santayana's argument for the unity of philosophy and poetry. This concise and compelling volume—described by Santayana as a “piece of literary criticism, together with a first broad lesson in the history of philosophy”—introduces Santayana's thought in the rich context of a European poetic tradition that demonstrates his broad conception of philosophy. Rejecting both the Platonic opposition of philosophy and poetry and more recent attempts to reduce philosophy to science, Santayana argues that philosophy and poetry at their best are united in articulating a comprehensive vision of the world that permits honest contemplation of the universe. He considers the ideal visions of three artists: Lucretius's naturalism provides a total perspective on the physical world but renders experience monotonous; Dante's supernaturalism provides a total perspective on experience but subordinates nature to morality; Goethe's romanticism provides a dramatic perspective on nature and experience but lacks totality. Santayana sees each as the best in his own way, though none is best in all ways; and he speculates that the ideal poet would integrate the gifts and insights of all three, resulting in “rational art,” of which philosophical poetry is a prime example. This critical edition, volume VIII of The Works of George Santayana, includes notes, textual commentary, lists of variants and emendations, an index, and other tools useful to Santayana scholars.

Different conceptions of the relationships between unity and multiplicity may be presented by varying the three distances inherent in dialogue poetry, each of which represents a degree of differentiation: the distance between the speakers, the distance between the poet and the speakers, and the distance between the speakers and the reader."

Only a handful of papers reprinted in this collection were written after 1959--Russell retired from academic philosophy for the second time after the publication of My Philosophical Development, devoting his final years to political protest. 1949 and 1950--the years that Russell was appointed to the Order of Merit and awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature--fall in the period covered by this volume. The papers include autobiographical and self-critical writings as well as papers on non-demonstrative inference, his contemporaries, metaphysics and epistemology, ethics and politics, John Stuart Mill, religion, Albert Einstein, and ordinary language philosophy.
