These three Upanishads set out to inform us that there is more to life, living, and loving than the everyday experience of our senses. Like adventurers trekking through Amazon jungles or astronauts traveling to the next cosmic orb, the Upanishads are adventures in consciousness itself. They direct our curiosity not toward what is known but to the Knower. Three Upanishads serves as a road map, guiding us, cajoling us, tempting us, towards a higher state of wellbeing, and a life free from the horrors of death. The old sages know every step of the way through these strange lands of inner knowledge and spiritual experience. They say they can't take us there, but they can show us the way. They show us what to look for, warn about missteps, tell us what to avoid, and point out any detours. Most important, the old sages advise that it is our personal destiny, our duty as human beings to have this adventure. Everything else in our lives is secondary. These spiritual texts are very personal manuscripts describing a landscape that is both real and universal. The sage's voices, passionately human, speak directly to you and me. They describe a topography of consciousness. Although these texts are thousands of years old, the message is as relevant today as they were to the sages of antiquity who wrote them. The sages insist we belong in this magical world. These higher or wider states of consciousness is our native land - our birth right. We are not cabin dwellers, born to a life cramped and confined to our body and mundane sense perceptions. We were born to explore the Universe, to push the limits of our human potential. The world of sense perceptions is our base camp. From here we travel to the summit and live in a world of joy, love, and peace.

About the BookHinduism is called Sanatana Dharma i.e. eternal religion or way of life based on the teachings of the Vedas prescribing practices of eternal values. The Vedas have four parts - the Samhitas, the Brahmanas, the Aranyakas and the Upanishads. The Upanishads are in the end portion of the Vedas. They are therefore called Vedanta. Vedanta called Prasthanatraya can be compared to a tripod. The first leg of the tripod is the Upanishads or the revealed Truth. The second is the Bhagavad Gita or the practical truth. And the third is the Brahmasutras or the reasoned truth. The Upanishads are considered apaurusheya, that is, not man-made. This revealed knowledge came from Brahma, the Creator. It has no beginning and no end. This Upanishadic knowledge is always new. It never becomes old because Truth can never become old. The more the Upanishads are read and reflected upon, the more their ennobling thoughts and loftiest ideas are discovered. There is always something new in them, something fresh and something invigorating like the early morning breeze of the spring season. The Upanishadic mantras are revealed truths based on the experiences of ancient sages, rishis. They embody the gems of infallible transcendental facts which are verifiable. The goal of all religions is the complete annihilation of bondages, sorrows, miseries and sufferings. Being threatened by miseries all the time, the question arose in human mind 'Is there any way out from this never-ending chasm?' The answer is provided by the Upanishads which tell us that to attain Bliss is the goal of human life and the method to reach that goal is to know oneself. Thus the Upanishads teach–atmanam viddhi–know thyself, which is the scientific principle enabling man to become free from human bondage. There are 108 Upanishads according to the Muktika Upanishad. Sankaracharya raised the status of eleven among them by writing his commentaries and so they became especially important. They are Isa, Kena, Katha, Prasna, Mundaka, Mandukya, Taittiriya, Aitareya, Svetasvatara, Chandogya and Brihadaranyaka. While these are the most important Upanishads and came to be called major ones, the others also have a lot to teach us about the various aspects of Divinity and life. The others are called minor Upanishadas. The present study is about seven major and three minor Upanishads.

The Upanishads: one of three new editions of the books in Eknath Easwaran's Classics of Indian Spirituality series You are what your deep driving desire is. As your desire is, so is your will. As your will is, so is your deed. As your deed is, so is your destiny. - Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (IV.4.5) Over two thousand years ago, the sages of India embarked on an extraordinary experiment. While others were exploring the external world, they turned inward - to explore consciousness itself. In the changing flow of human thought, they asked, is there anything that remains the same? They found that there is indeed a changeless Reality underlying the ebb and flow of life. Their discoveries are an expression of what Aldous Huxley called the Perennial Philosophy, the wellspring of all religious faith that assures us that God-realization is within human reach. The Upanishads are the sages' wisdom, given in intense sessions of spiritual instruction in ashrams, in family gatherings, in a royal court, in the kingdom of Death himself. And Easwaran shows how these teachings are just as relevant to us now as they ever were centuries ago.
