The land of Israel is intimately linked to the adventures of the prophets, men like Elijah, Amos, Hosea, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the list goes on and on. How about prophets who were women? Does anyone remember that two gates of the Jerusalem Temple bore the name of Huldah, one of these women? Probably not, which is not all that astonishing given that history was written by men . . . Some women have, however, found places in history: Sarah and Hagar, Rebekah, Rachel and Leah, to name a few. Other women also deserve to emerge from silence: women like Miriam, Hannah, and Huldah. It is nonetheless true that these women have to be identified with reference to a man: the first is Moses' sister, the second is Samuel's mother, the third a colleague of King Josiah, Israel's reformer. This little book paints their portraits, with much sensitivity and tenderness, but never restraining disgust when the role of the women is found to have been erased unjustly. The abundant use made here of Jewish traditions of Bible reading will help readers discover the riches of a tradition uniquely suited to broadening their experience. Nor will they be left unaffected or indifferent by the deep spirituality revealed here.

Three Women And The Lord written by Adrienne von Spyer and has been published by Ignatius Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986 with Religion categories.

Three Women and the Lord presents three key figures in Saint Luke's Gospel: Mary Magdalen, the unnamed woman who washed the feet of Jesus with her tears, and Mary of Bethany. As Adrienne von Speyr meditates on the Gospel passages about these three women, she explores the particular, personal mission that the Lord gave each one and links it with one of the three theological virtues: faith, hope, and love. Through the stories of these women, von Speyr demonstrates that every person who encounters Jesus and receives his mercy is changed by him and given a unique way to reveal his identity as Savior and Lord.

Three Women, Three Letters, Three Trials... Faith has shouldered years of hate towards the man who ruined her life...the man she blames for her low self-esteem and unsuccessful relationships with the opposite sex. Grace has lived the past thirty-two years using her seemingly perfect life as a mask to cover up her troubled and painful childhood. Hope deals with the demons of her past by drowning herself in endless, drug-induced highs and shocking, unforgettable lows. One God... These three inspiring stories prove how only God can heal old wounds as these women battle with forgiveness, trust, and finding peace. As dead secrets are unburied and their troubled past is revealed...God reveals his power. These letters are a reminder that what is broken can be mended by having unwavering Faith, by remaining beneath the covering of God's amazing Grace and by never losing Hope.

A marriage of convenience between a widowed banker and the strong woman of faith he hires as a nanny blossoms into more in this historical romance set in small-town Oregon in 1879. Drought has forced farmers around the small town of Bountiful in the Hope region of Oregon to mortgage their property. Then word comes of plans for a spur line to run through the area and join the railroad in nearby Milton. Folks with money see an opportunity to fill their coffers by buying farmland cheap then selling to the railroad for a profit. The Bank of Bountiful, owned by Eli Whitman, appears to be doing that, as well. Widowed two years earlier, Eli, with a son and daughter to raise, sought a hard-working, educated Christian woman to care for them and his home. Olivia Moore filled the bill, and as soon as Eli recognized her as an excellent investment, he offered her first employment then a marriage of convenience. While Olivia is an excellent choice, her large family gives Eli pause. He knows about the problems posed by in-laws, so he will do whatever it takes to avoid a repeat of his earlier experiences. When Papa tells Olivia the Moore family must move according to Eli's terms for the new railroad line, she fears for their safety, since they'll be homeless during winter. Where will they go? How will they survive? It is up to Olivia to convince her husband to renege on his demands, though she swore before their marriage she would stay out of his business. For Such a Time As This cleverly retells the biblical story of Esther against the backdrop of the American West, transporting readers with an engaging Christian story of duty, romance, family, and love.

Liberia was founded by the American Colonization Society (ACS) in the 1820s as an African refuge for free blacks and liberated American slaves. While interest in African migration waned after the Civil War, it roared back in the late nineteenth century with the rise of Jim Crow segregation and disfranchisement throughout the South. The back-to-Africa movement held great new appeal to the South's most marginalized citizens, rural African Americans. Nowhere was this interest in Liberia emigration greater than in Arkansas. More emigrants to Liberia left from Arkansas than any other state in the 1880s and 1890s. In Journey of Hope, Kenneth C. Barnes explains why so many black Arkansas sharecroppers dreamed of Africa and how their dreams of Liberia differed from the reality. This rich narrative also examines the role of poor black farmers in the creation of a black nationalist identity and the importance of the symbolism of an ancestral continent. Based on letters to the ACS and interviews of descendants of the emigrants in war-torn Liberia, this study captures the life of black sharecroppers in the late 1800s and their dreams of escaping to Africa.
