Shirl is a single mother who urges her son's baby-sitter to swat him when he misbehaves. Helena went back to work to get off welfare, then quit to be with her small daughter. Kathy was making good money but got into cocaine and had to give up her two-year-old son during her rehabilitation. Pundits, politicians, and social critics have plenty to say about such women and their behavior. But in this book, for the first time, we hear what these women have to say for themselves. An eye-opening--and heart-rending--account from the front lines of poverty, Through My Own Eyes offers a firsthand look at how single mothers with the slimmest of resources manage from day to day. We witness their struggles to balance work and motherhood and watch as they negotiate a bewildering maze of child-care and social agencies. For three years the authors followed the lives of fourteen women from poor Boston neighborhoods, all of whom had young children and had been receiving welfare intermittently. We learn how these women keep their families on firm footing and try--frequently in vain--to gain ground. We hear how they find child-care and what they expect from it, as well as what the childcare providers have to say about serving low-income families. Holloway and Fuller view these lives in the context of family policy issues touching on the disintegration of inner cities, welfare reform, early childhood and pro-choice poverty programs.

Through Our Own Eyes written by Guy Brett and has been published by Library Company of Philadelphia this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986 with Art and history categories.

Brett, a former London Times art critic, surveys five popular art movementsthe protest patchworks (arpillera of Chile; agricultural commune paintings of Huxian, China; popular art in Zaire's Shaba province; the visual testimony of Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors; and art produced by the women protesters at Greenham Common in Great Britain. The author seeks to establish "these productions as an artistic and social phenomenon of great significance which can often give a deeper insight into the contemporary world than the major established forms of art, or of the mass media." This thesis, however, is much larger than the 160 pages allotted to it and is often supported with undeveloped assertions and unjustified conclusions. For example, Brett states that "mechanical reproduction has not in practice served to articulate the desires of the masses"; but what about popular photography? Fortunately, he is a sensitive reader of images and proves a competent guide in unfamiliar art terrain. The book includes 40 color and 100 black-and-white reproductions and photographs. -- From Publisher's Weekly Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Bo Giertz wrote this book drawing upon the exegetical insights that he received from his mentor Anton Fridrichsen before, during and after his trip to Palestine in the early 1930's. The book is a third-person retelling of the gospels that brings into account various Old Testament references and the contemporary interpretations of those passages by the Jews of Jesus' day as well as contemporary events throughout the Roman Empire, but most especially those directly affecting the Jewish people of Israel at the time, so that the gospel stories take on new life and meaning for the reader. It's both a harmonization of the gospels, and a commentary on them, but much richer. The perspectives change depending on the episode. Sometimes the perspective is from that of a disciple, sometimes from that of a person being healed or a bystander observing. The Christmas story is told from the perspective of Shepherds, the crucifixion scene dwells on the perspective of Simon of Cyrene.

We are human and respectable creations of God, be it women or any other gender, we have the fundamental right to dignity - says the author in his plea to be heard and recognised as he speaks as ‘Draupadi’. He speaks straight from the heart of Draupadi with an aim to share with everyone the torment and anguish that Draupadi and alike undergo every day and that every human being has the right to respect, freedom, happiness and the right to his or her opinion and point of view. But, is it possible in this male-dominated world? This is a question that is explored in this book and explained in a simple and contemporary fashion. The Author, who is himself a male, describes beautifully the pain of a women and alike.

This is a tale, written contemporaneously, of natures power to have a significant, positive, and lasting impact on our world. It begins on a mountaintop in a small village north of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, in the summer of 2015. A description of the challenges with which the average person is confronted daily is contrasted with the magical beauty of nature. This beauty shared among people is identified as a catalyst for positive growth in our communities. The pitfalls and benefits of modern life are presented through the prism of two federal election campaigns in Canada and in the United States of America. The elections of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on October 19, 2015, and of President Donald J. Trump on November 8, 2016, are thoroughly discussed. The power of the people, harnessing the beauty of nature to effect change that represents their values, is woven constantly throughout this discussion. The role of the media in helping and hindering the people to achieve this goal of positive change is examined. The objective of this story is to initiate a dialogue between the reader and the author. This dialogue would emphasize how the power of nature when shared can be the impetus for the kind of change in our lives that truly represents our core values.

The perils, thrills, twists and turns of a celestial battle between the forces of good and evil shatter the quiet of snow-covered Pennsylvania farm lands and the peace and good order of Washington DC. To avert economic disaster and suffering on a global scale, ordinary men and women are called into extraordinary service. Bonded by a centuries old oath and relying on faith and God-given gifts, wits and wisdom, they clash with the minions and agents of an ancient and relentless foe. Though twenty-first century technology and weapons are exploited by both sides, the climactic battle hinges upon ancient fighting arts and arms. In combat to the death, deciding mankind's fate and shaking the foundations of Heaven and Hell, unlikely heroes, each with one blue and one brown eye, emerge to thwart Satan's latest assault on the Gates of Heaven. The heroes learn that only God can make it possible to see and reach beyond the human vistas in their own eyes. About the Authors There were five men and five women. Their ages ranged from late thirties to mid-seventies. Among them were retired and active duty military officers, attorneys, federal government professionals, a college professor, a former FBI agent, and a former Intelligence official. Some were related and others were their friends. The two things they all had in common was a love of Christ and a love of writing. All were accomplished writers in their professional fields. These people decided to write a novel together, rotating writing through the story a chapter at a time. No outline. No idea where the story was going. The only rules being one had to continue with what was previously written as a foundation, but could go anywhere their imagination led them for their next chapter. What would such a novel look like? The answer to this question is contained in In Our Own Eyes, written by Sarah E. Buckley-Biscardo, Katharine D. Gregg, Judith E. McKee, Brian M. Michelson, Kira R. Michelson, Joel F. Pannebaker, Robert N. Pohtos, Fredric W. Rohm (Bill), Fredric W. Rohm (Ric), and Sara E. Yoder.

With My Own Eyes tells the history of the nineteenth-century Lakotas. Susan Bordeaux Bettelyoun (1857–1945), the daughter of a French-American fur trader and a Brulé Lakota woman, was raised near Fort Laramie and experienced firsthand the often devastating changes forced on the Lakotas. As Bettelyoun grew older, she became increasingly dissatisfied with the way her people’s history was being represented by non-Natives. With My Own Eyes represents her attempt to correct misconceptions about Lakota history. Bettelyoun’s narrative was recorded during the 1930s by another Lakota historian, Josephine Waggoner. This detailed, insightful account of Lakota history was never previously published.

Life Is Never Mainly About Love and Marriage. So Learn to Live and Date for More. Many of you grew up assuming that marriage would meet all of your needs and unlock God's purposes for you. But God has far more planned for you than your future marriage. Not Yet Married is not about waiting quietly in the corner of the world for God to bring you "the one," but about inspiring you to live and date for more now. If you follow Jesus, the search for a spouse is no longer a pursuit of the perfect person, but a pursuit of more of God. He will likely write a love story for you different than the one you would write for yourself, but that's because he loves you and knows how to write a better story. This book was written to help you find real hope, happiness, and purpose in your not-yet-married life.
