This first volume of Yagyu Munenori's treatise on martial philosophy is about being observant and adaptable, and is a lesson in how to progress on difficult paths. He entreats us to observe what is around us, evaluate our own motivations, and find peace with ourselves such that we can ensure that our actions promote life. After 14 years of training in the martial arts passed down from the Yagyu family, and applying the lessons in business and education, the author has divided up Munenori's text into three parts: 1) The Why - As with everything, the motivations behind what we do are the most important. This section applies to all of our actions, and has us evaluate our intentions to ensure that we promote life. 2) The What - In the second section Munenori outlines skills that we should aspire to attain for any interaction with others during conflict, be it a duel or a debate. 3) The How - Finally he goes into three methodologies on how we can work to attain the skills outlined previously. These methodologies are useful for working to learn, or teach, any difficult skillsets.

A 2023 Batchelder Honor Book From acclaimed Chinese author Cao Wenxuan, recipient of the Hans Christian Andersen Award, comes a compelling family saga spanning fifty years and three generations. Ah-Mei and her French grandmother, Nainai, share a rare bond. Maybe it’s because Ah-Mei is the only girl grandchild. Or maybe it’s because the pair look so much alike and neither resembles the rest of their Chinese family. Politics and war make 1960s Shanghai a hard place to grow up, especially when racism and bigotry are rife, and everyone seems suspicious of Nainai’s European heritage and interracial marriage. In this time of political upheaval, Ah-Mei and her family suffer much—and when the family silk business falters, they are left with almost nothing. Ah-Mei and her grandmother are resourceful, but will the tender connection they share bring them enough strength to carry through? This multigenerational saga by one of China’s most esteemed children’s authors takes the reader from 1920s France to a ravaged postwar Shanghai and through the convulsions of the Cultural Revolution.

When a tsunami sends a massive island made entirely of trash crashing into the Taiwanese coast, two very different people—an outcast from a mythical island and a woman on the verge of suicide—are united in ways they never could have imagined. Here is the English-language debut of a new and exciting award-winning voice from Taiwan, who has written an “astonishing” novel (The Independent) that is at once fantasy, reality, and dystopian environmental saga. Fifteen-year-old Atile’i—a native of Wayo Wayo, an island somewhere in the Pacific—has come of age. Following the custom of his people, he is set adrift as a sacrifice to the Sea God but, unlike those who have gone before him, Atile’i is determined to defy precedent and survive. His chances seem slim, but just as it appears that hope is lost, Atile’i comes across a sprawling trash vortex floating in the ocean and climbs onto it. Meanwhile, on the east coast of Taiwan, Alice, a college professor, is overcome with grief. Her husband and son are missing, having disappeared while hiking in the mountains near their home. Alice is so distraught that she decides to end her own life. But her plans are interrupted by a violent storm that causes the trash vortex to collide with the Taiwanese coast, bringing Atile’i along with it. Alice and Atile’i subsequently form an unlikely friendship that helps each of them come to terms with what they have lost. Together they set out to uncover the mystery of Alice’s lost family, following their footsteps into the mountains. Intertwined with Alice and Atile’i’s story are the lives of others affected by the tsunami, from environmentalists to Taiwan’s indigenous peoples—and, of course, the mysterious man with the compound eyes. A work of lyrical beauty that combines magical realism and environmental fable, The Man with the Compound Eyes is an incredible story about the bonds of family, the meaning of love, and the lasting effects of human destruction.

Six Faces Of Globalization written by Anthea Roberts and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-28 with Political Science categories.

An essential guide to the intractable public debates about the virtues and vices of economic globalization, cutting through the complexity to reveal the fault lines that divide us and the points of agreement that might bring us together. Globalization has lifted millions out of poverty. Globalization is a weapon the rich use to exploit the poor. Globalization builds bridges across national boundaries. Globalization fuels the populism and great-power competition that is tearing the world apart. When it comes to the politics of free trade and open borders, the camps are dug in, producing a kaleidoscope of claims and counterclaims, unlikely alliances, and unexpected foes. But what exactly are we fighting about? And how might we approach these issues more productively? Anthea Roberts and Nicolas Lamp cut through the confusion with an indispensable survey of the interests, logics, and ideologies driving these intractable debates, which lie at the heart of so much political dispute and decision making. The authors expertly guide us through six competing narratives about the virtues and vices of globalization: the old establishment view that globalization benefits everyone (win-win), the pessimistic belief that it threatens us all with pandemics and climate change (lose-lose), along with various rival accounts that focus on specific winners and losers, from China to AmericaÕs rust belt. Instead of picking sides, Six Faces of Globalization gives all these positions their due, showing how each deploys sophisticated arguments and compelling evidence. Both globalizationÕs boosters and detractors will come away with their eyes opened. By isolating the fundamental value conflictsÑgrowth versus sustainability, efficiency versus social stabilityÑdriving disagreement and show where rival narratives converge, Roberts and Lamp provide a holistic framework for understanding current debates. In doing so, they showcase a more integrative way of thinking about complex problems.

For Lucas Gault, his twenty-third birthday brings with it the gnawing sense that his privileged life isn't adding up. A sense driven deeper as he examines himself through the lovely eyes of a poised young woman he meets at a New York nightclub. To Luke she represents getting back to the values his father raised him and his twin brother on--if only he can convince the disciplined and focused "working man's" daughter, that he is more than just a shallow celebrity. However, Luke has some major issues to work out, not the least of which are, toning down his decadent British rocker lifestyle and reining in his impulsive sexual nature. These challenges and breaking away from his controlling brother prove to be harder than he thought. Worse yet, just when he begins to make headway with her, he finds himself embroiled personally in the burgeoning AIDS epidemic of the '80's. Raena, wants to be more than "Daddy's little girl," an insurmountable endeavor, especially considering who her father is and the far-reaching influence he wields on either side of the Atlantic. Initially Raena does try to take her more worldly-wise cousin's advise and remain a "good girl," focusing her attention on her studies and her passion, dance. However, the power of coincidence, curiosity and physical attraction prove to be strong pulls for her and she soon finds herself heading down a questionable road she is not equipped to travel. A road she has paved with deceptions that could very well lead to something way worse than heartache.
