A magnum opus in the now vast domain of discourse studies, whose history, methods, and subdomains mobody knows as well as Robert de Beugrande. No other book in the humanities and social sciences today integrates such encylopedic knowledge into a thoroughly transdisciplinary, international, intercultural, and critical program. For all advanced students of discourse, this book should be their major mentor, guide, and compendium of research. -Teun A. van Dijk, University of Amsterdam and Editor of the journals Text and Discourse and Society - Professor de Beugrande has been one of the most influential scholars in text linguistics since he helped to found it as a discipline. He commands a large panorama of knowledge and brings this learning to bear on a variety of topics, giving fresh insights and new dimensions. In his latest book, he ranges over linguistic, educational, and cultural disciplines in order to synthesize an important framework within which text and discourse can be understood in new ways. -John Sinclair, Birmingham University and Editor-in-Chief of Collins COBUILD English Language Dictionary

Functionalism And Grammar written by Talmy Givón and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book is Prof. Givon's long-awaited critical examination of the fundamental theoretical and methodological underpinnings of the functionalist approach to grammar. It challenges functionalists to take their own medicine and establish non-circular empirical definitions of both 'function' and 'structure'. Ideological hand-waving, however fervent and right-thinking, is seldom an adequate substitute for analytic rigor and empirical responsibility. If the reductionist extremism of the various structuralist schools is to be challenged on solid intellectual grounds, the challenge cannot itself be equally extreme in its reductionism. The book is divided into nine chapters: 1. Prospectus, somewhat jaundiced (overview) 2. Markedness as meta-iconicity: Distributional and cognitive correlates of syntactic structure 3. The functional basis of grammatical typology 4. Modal prototypes of truth and action 5. Taking structure seriously: Constituency and the VP node 6. Taking structure seriously II: Grammatical relations and clause union 7. The distribution of grammar in text: On interpreting conditional associations 8. Coming to terms with cognition: Coherence in text vs. coherence in mind 9. On the co-evolution of language, mind and brain.

Mind Code And Context written by T. Givon and has been published by Psychology Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-01-21 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Scholars concerned with the phenomenon of mind have searched through history for a principled yet non-reductionist approach to the study of knowledge, communication, and behavior. Pragmatics has been a recurrent theme in Western epistemology, tracing itself back from pre-Socratic dialectics and Aristotle's bio- functionalism, all the way to Wittgenstein's content-dependent semantics. This book's treatment of pragmatics as an analytic method focuses on the central role of context in determining the perception, organization, and communication of experience. As a bioadaptive strategy, pragmatics straddles the middle ground between absolute categories and the non-discrete gradation of experience, reflecting closely the organism's own evolutionary compromises. In parallel, pragmatic reasoning can be shown to play a pivotal role in the process of empirical science, through the selection of relevant facts, the abduction of likely hypotheses, and the construction of non-trivial explanations. In this volume, Professor Givon offers pragmatics as both an analytic method and a strategic intellectual framework. He points out its relevance to our understanding of traditional problems in philosophy, anthropology, linguistics, cognitive psychology, neuro-biology, and evolution. Finally, the application of pragmatics to the study of the mind and behavior constitutes an implicit challenge to the current tenets of artificial intelligence.
