The red box in this autobiographical story contains the diary that Sis' father kept in the 1950s when he was lost in Tibet. The diary and the red box that contains it will be the starting point of our residency activities and discussions. Students will work through the construction of a "red box" to house the book and other memorabilia collected in conjunction with student writing or drawing. Using traditional clamshell boxmaking techniques, they will build upon the book arts skills they are developing in their course work. Under the direction of their art teacher after the residency, each student will also construct a hardcover book, suitable for use as a diary or travel journal and create as a cover design a small drawing of a mandala inspired by those contained in Sis' book.
