Excerpt from The Ticonderoga Expedition of 1775: Biographical Sketch of Robert O. Bascom Robert O. Bascom, student, lawyer, historian and archeologist, died at his home in Fort Edward, on the 19th day of May, 1909, aged fifty-three years. He was born in Orwell, Vermont, and traced his paternal ancestry through successive generations of sturdy New England stock to Thomas Bascom, a native of England, who emigrated to America in 1634, and settled in Windsor, Connecticut. His great, great grandfather, Ezekial Bascom, was a participant in the Colonial Wars, and his great grandfather, Elias Bascom, was a soldier of the Revolution. After attending the High Schools of Brandon and Shoreham, Vermont, and laying broadly the foundations of an education, Mr. Bascom entered the Fort Edward Collegiate Institute, and graduated from that institution in 1876. He continued, for a time, at the Institute, winning an enviable reputation as a teacher. He became attracted, however, by the profession of law, and decided to devote his energies to its service. He commenced and pursued his legal studies, with his characteristic enthusiasm, and was admitted to the Bar in 1883. Shortly afterwards he opened an office in Fort Edward, and entered upon the successful practice of his profession. From that time until his death, though doing much valuable work in other fields, he was first a lawyer, well grounded in the principles of the law, and apt in their interpretation and application. In 1905, a vacancy occurred in the Office of District Attorney of Washington County, and Mr. Bascom was appointed to that position. His official work was so satisfactory that in the fall of that year he was elected for a term of three years. Excerpt from Papers Relating to the Expedition to Ticonderoga, April and May, 1775 J ohu Brown, Esq, then a young lawyer of Pittsfield - afterwards a dis linguished officer in the army of the Revolution. He is named, in Allen's dispatch to the Massachusetts Congress, as having greatly contributed to the taking of the Fortress, and by Capt. Mott, as an able counsellor, full of spirit and resolution, as well as good conduct. - (amer. Archives, 4th se ries, 556, He was sent to carry intelligence of the successful result of the expedition to the Congress at Philadelphia. His account against the Colony of Connecticut, for 14 days' service in the expedition to Ticondeand Mr. Stephens had not got back from Albany. I in quired why they sent back to me to dismiss the expedition, when neither our men from Albany nor the re'connoitering party were returned? They said they did not think that we should succeed. I told them that fellow they saw knew nothing about the garrison; that I had seen him since, and had examined him strictly, and that he was a lying fellow and had not been at the fort. I told them with the two hundred men that we proposed to raise, I was not afraid to go round the Fort in open light; if it was reinforced with five hundred men, they would not follow us out into the woods; that the accounts we had would not do to go back with, and tell in Hartford. While on this discourse, Mr. Halsey and Stephens came back from Albany, and both agreed with me that it was best to go forward; after which, Mr. Halsey and Mr. Bull both declared that they would not go back for no story, 'till they had seen the Fort them selves. On which it was concluded that we would pro coed; and as provisions were very scarce on the Grants, we sent Capt. Stephens and Mr. Hewitt to Albany New City to purchase provisions and send to us, as soon as they could: and Mr. Romans left us and joined no more; we were all glad, as he had been a trouble to us, all the time he was with us.
