La historia de la humanidad dista mucho de ser el relato colectivo de una libertad compartida por hombres y mujeres a través del tiempo. Ni el hombre ha podido decir lo que ama, ni lo que sinceramente piensa y aún menos ha podido ponerlo por escrito y dejar a otros que leyeran sus ideas, sus quejas o su pasión sin ser estorbados o perseguidos por ello. La historia de la cultura escrita está protagonizada por escritores y escribientes, pero también por censores. La secular inclinación hispana a censurar los escritos ajenos tendría su remate en la larga dictadura del general Francisco Franco. Con bastante frecuencia, se considera que las principales víctimas de la censura fueron los creadores, los poetas, novelistas, dramaturgos o cineastas que tuvieron que poner freno a su inspiración, que contemplaron la mutilación o la prohibición de su obra. ¿Cuántos libros se escribieron en balde? ¿Cuántos dejaron de escribirse por la acción embotadora de la autocensura? Sin embargo, los principales damnificados de este ataque a la inteligencia no fueron unos centenares de intelectuales, sino los millones de españoles que fueron lo que no leyeron, porque, de haberlos dejado leerlo, quién sabe lo que habrían sido. ¿Cómo cuantificar la pérdida de quienes no tuvieron la oportunidad de leerlos o la tuvieron cuando ya era demasiado tarde? Dos grandes ejes vertebran el presente trabajo colectivo. El primero, de tipo cronológico, comienza con el análisis de la importancia de la guerra civil para entender los derroteros futuros de la censura y llega hasta los años sesenta, cuando se promulga una nueva ley de prensa que modifica sustancialmente las reglas del juego censorio. Los estudios que integran el segundo bloque poseen una naturaleza transversal: así, se estudia la acción represiva desarrollada por la censura contra el libro catalán y vasco, la censura de obras italianas entre 1936 y 1945, el control censorio de dos géneros editoriales de gran popularidad (la novela del oeste y los best-sellers) y, finalmente, la recepción que la censura dispensó a la literatura de terror inglesa.
