“Este libro no necesitaba prólogo: la carta del señor Velarde, con la cual va honrado, y la primera mía, contestación a ella, justifican la publicación de los artículos cuya colección forma el texto de este volumen; y el motivo de coleccionarlos en él, es la demanda que de su colección me han hecho los amigos que me leen y los libreros que me venden. Y que no se me ofenda ningún librero, ni se me engalle ningún académico por esta frase: porque se dice que se lee y que se vende a Quevedo o a Valera cuando se leen y se venden sus obras: lo mismo me sucede a mí; unos me leen y otros me venden; y si los que me venden no me vendieran, no me leerían los que me leen, y yo publico este libro por agradecimiento a los unos y a los otros. La razón y la excusa de lo que en él de mí mismo digo, van también alegadas en su relato; pero de las circunstancias en que le he escrito y del motivo de imprimirle dividido en partes y no en Madrid, sino en Barcelona, me conviene, aunque necesario no sea, decir cuatro palabras; siquiera no encuentren cuatro lectores a quienes leérmelas interese, ni media docena que en leérmelas se complazcan”. José Zorrilla escribe “Recuerdos del tiempo viejo” a modo de memorias. En ellas repasa toda su vida, intentando hallar el momento en el que todo se vino abajo y la vida se enfrentó a él. Cansado de escribir, al borde de la pobreza y solo, este trabajo es un lamento que mira hacia el pasado intentando buscar el momento en el que todo se encaminó al terrible presente que le toca vivir.
