Diese Publikation widmet sich den so genannten Würzburger Tiepolo-Skizzenbüchern im Martin-von-Wagner-Museum der Universität Würzburg. Die Zeichnungsalben mit den Inventarnummern WS 134, 135 und 136 erfahren hiermit erstmalig eine umfassende wissenschaftliche Bearbeitung. Basis ist dabei der Katalog, in dem die Bände unter kodikologischen Gesichtspunkten beschrieben, die einzelnen Kreidezeichnungen auf blauem Papier vorgestellt und schließlich Fragen der Attribution, der Funktion und der Datierung kritisch erörtert werden. Die Zeichnungen des Albums WS 134 können Georg Anton Urlaub, einem Schüler Tiepolos, zugeschrieben werden. Es sind Pauskopien nach Vorlagen Giovanni Battista und Giovanni Domenico Tiepolos, die während deren Würzburger Aufenthalts in den Jahren 1750-53 entstanden. In den Alben WS 135 und 136 befinden sich dagegen eigenhändige Zeichnungen Giovanni Battistas und Giovanni Domenicos der Jahre 1743-53, woraus die besondere Bedeutung der Würzburger Tiepolo-Zeichnungsbände hervorgeht. Im darstellenden Teil werden Kreidezeichnungen der Tiepolo in anderen Sammlungen sowie Blätter von Künstlern der Tiepolo-Werkstatt untersucht. Dadurch ist es möglich, die Provenienz der Bücher zu ermitteln sowie enge Beziehungen zwischen den Würzburger Blättern und Beständen im Museo Correr in Venedig, in der St. Petersburger Eremitage oder der Staatsgalerie Stuttgart nachzuweisen. Ebenso konnten neue Erkenntnisse zur kontrovers diskutierten Attributions- und Funktionsproblematik der Kreidezeichnungen sowie zur Werkstattorganisation der Tiepolo gewonnen werden.
