Arno Schmidt war ein Autor, so deutsch, daß es deutscher kaum geht. Dennoch hat er gerade im romanischen Sprachbereich unter nachwachsenden Kollegen auffällig viele Bewunderer und kreative Nachfahren gefunden, insbesondere im spanisch-portugiesischen Sprachraum und hier ganz besonders in Südamerika. Diesem seltsamen Phänomen wird in "Tierra del Arno" systematisch nachgegangen durch Vorstellung einzelner Autoren und Bücher, die auf die eine oder andere Weise an Arno Schmidt und sein Werk anknüpfen. Schon zu Schmidts Lebzeiten erschienen zwei seiner Bücher in spanischer Übersetzung, nämlich "Die Gelehrtenrepublik" und "Aus dem Leben eines Fauns". Später folgten weitere Werke, doch die beiden ersten übersetzten Romane bestimmen dauerhaft das Bild Schmidts auf der iberischen Halbinsel und in Lateinamerika, nämlich als eine Art Science-Fiction-Avantgardist einerseits und unerschrockener Brecher politischer und sexueller Tabus andererseits. In Gestalt dieses Bildes wird Schmidt gleichsam ein spanischsprachiger Autor. In "Tierra del Arno" vorgestellt werden Reflexe auf Schmidt in den Büchern folgender Autoren: Fernando Aramburu, Roberto Bolaño, Rafael Cippolini, Mariano Dupont, Almeida Faria, Nicolás Giacobone, Juan Goytisolo, Ercole Lissardi, Ricardo Piglia, Guillermo Piro, Patricio Pron, Marcelo Rezende, Julián Ríos, Antonio J. Rodríguez, Ramiro Sanchiz, Miguel Vitagliano und Paco Yáñez.
