Proses perkembangan pembaharuan dalam Islam tidak bisa lepas dari peran tokoh-tokoh pembaharuan itu sendiri. Di antara tokoh pembaharu Islam yang cukup berpengaruh dalam skala internasional, termasuk di Indonesia, adalah Syeikh Muhammad Abduh, tokoh yang memiliki karakter yang khas dalam pemikiran pembaharuannya. Ide pembaharuan Muhammad Abduh pada dasarnya adalah mengembalikan Islam sebagaimana yang berlaku pada zaman salaf. Adapun jalan yang ditempuhnya untuk membangkitkan umat Islam adalah mencerdaskan mereka dengan ilmu pengetahuan melalui pendidikan dan pengajaran. Syeikh Muhammad Abduh sendiri mendapatkan inspirasi dari gurunya: Sayid Jamaluddin al-Afghani. Nama lain yang juga sering disebut, bahkan sering dikategorikan sama, adalah gerakan Wahhabi yang diperkenalkan oleh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab. Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab banyak merujuk pada pemikiran Ibnu Taimiyyah. Gerakan Wahhabi sendiri mengaku, meskipun mereka bermazhab Hambali, namun mereka tidak ingin taqlid begitu saja kepada perkataan atau keputusan imam mazhab itu. Mereka sendiri lebih suka menamakan dirinya termasuk golongan Salafiyyah, yaitu golongan orang-orang saleh dalam tiga generasi pertama sesudah Nabi Muhammad, yang ingin membasmi semua pertumbuhan-pertumbuhan baru dałam Islam sesudah zaman tiga generasi itu. Antara Muhammad Abduh dan Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab memang keduanya memiliki spirit yang sama dalam memajukan aras pembaruan Islam: kembali kepada al-Quran dan Sunnah. Tapi keduanya juga memiliki pendekatan, corak, dan bidang fokus pembaruan berbeda, malahan kadang tak mesti sejalan. Di alam Nusantara, pengaruh kedua tokoh mewarnai kemunculan gerakan-gerakan yang dinamakan “Kaum Muda”—sebagai antitesis kalangan Muslim tradisional yang memilih berpegang pada satu mazhab dan cenderung menutup pintu ijtihad. Kaum Muda di alam Nusantara bahkan mengambil inspirasi dari kedua tokoh itu sehingga di kemudian hari jadi satu problema hingga dilema di kalangan anggota kelompok yang merujuk kepadanya. Abduh ataukah Wahhabi yang jejaknya membekas di kalangan Kaum Muda? Atau keduanya sekaligus, dalam arti para reformer pemikiran Islam di alam Nusantara mengambil sebagian dari Abduh dan sebagian lagi dari Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab sehingga membentuk pergerakan eklektik yang pada hari ini menjadi bahak koreksi dan kritik dari apa yang disebut kelompok “Salafi”. Tulisan-tulisan dalam buku ini mendokumentasikan perjalanan para penyahut gema pembaharuan Islam di alam Nusantara. Bagaimana mereka memetik narasi baik dari Muhammad Abduh (dan anak didiknya, terutama, Sayid Muhammad Rasyid Ridha) dan purifikasi racikan Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab. Sebagai sebuah dokumen tertulis, jejak-jejak pemikiran dan amatan para ulama cum intelektual (sebagian lagi “sekadar” politikus, semisal Soekarno) di buku ini perlu menjadi pertimbangan Muslimin dalam belajar dari pergulatan internal umat sehingga tak sampai menyisakan (lagi) konflik panjang berupa kesumat di dada.
