This volume represents a contribution to comparative scholarship in Medieval and Renaissance studies in its investigation of the ingenious diversity of roguish practices found in Medieval and Renaissance literature and its recognition of the coherent normative function of tales of tricksters and pranksters. The wide variety of works analysed, from those forming part of the established canon of texts on undergraduate degree schemes to lesser-known works, makes the volume of interest to students and researchers alike. The roguish behaviour of women, priests, foxes and outlaws and the knavery of Eulenspiegel and Panurge are used to illustrate how rituals of inversion and humiliation typical of the medieval carnival are reflected in literary accounts of trickery, and to question whether the restorative function attributed to carnival celebration is equally to be found in the intra-textual and extra-textual outcomes of trickery. This analysis is supported by studies into the trickster in mythology, sociological investigations into the role of disorder, Bakhtinian theories of carnival and the carnivalesque, and theories of black humour.

This volume examines the ten most popular fictional narratives in early modern Europe between 1470 and 1800. Each of these narratives was marketed in numerous European languages and circulated throughout several centuries. Combining literary studies and book history, this work offers for the first time a transnational perspective on a selected text corpus of this genre. It explores the spatio-temporal transmission of the texts in different languages and the materiality of the editions: the narratives were bought, sold, read, translated and adapted across European borders, from the south of Spain to Iceland and from Great Britain to Poland. Thus, the study analyses the multi-faceted processes of cultural circulation, translation and adaptation of the texts. In their diverse forms of mediality such as romance, drama, ballad and penny prints, they also make a significant contribution to a European identity in the early modern period. The narrative texts examined here include Apollonius, Septem sapientum, Amadis de Gaula, Fortunatus, Pierre de Provence et la belle Maguelonne, Melusine, Griseldis, Aesopus' Life and Fables, Reynaert de vos and Till Ulenspiegel.

Akrostichon und Erzählstruktur" soll mit dieser Hausarbeit der Versuch unternommen werden, tiefer in die Thematik einzusteigen, weitere Informationen zu liefern und sich kritischer mit einzelnen Forschungspositionen auseinanderzusetzen. Unterstellt werden soll dabei, dass Herman Bote gemeinhin als der Verfasser des "Ulenspiegel" gilt. Auch wenn zeitweilig andere Persönlichkeiten, wie z.B. Dr. Thomas Murner als Autoren gehandelt wurden/ werden, erscheint es in der Forschungsliteratur dennoch so, als sei H. Bote weithin als Ulenspiegelschöpfer anerkannt. Einen nicht zu verachtenden Anteil an dieser wissenschaftlichen Position hat Peter Honegger, der mit seiner 1973 erschienen Publikation "Ulenspiegel. Ein Beitrag zur Druckgeschichte und Verfasserfrage" für neue Erkenntnisse in der Ulenspiegelforschung sorgte. Doch nicht nur in Bezug auf den Verfasser lieferte P. Honegger wichtige Informationen, sondern auch hinsichtlich der gesamten Erzählstruktur des Textes. Ich möchte daher im ersten Abschnitt auf die Fragen der Verfasserschaft und der vermeintlichen Erzählstruktur des "Ulenspiegel" nach Peter Honegger eingehen und mich im zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit damit kritisch auseinandersetzten. Dabei sollen auch andere Konzepte zur Erzählstruktur in den Blick genommen werden. - Dies ergibt sogleich einen Blick auf die verwendete Forschungsliteratur. Hauptsächlich werde ich mit P. Honeggers Publikation arbeiten - nicht zuletzt wegen der methodischen Praktikabilität. The presence of so many fabliaux in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales is intriguing in its own right, given the fact that there are no real fabliaux in Middle English befor Chaucer. But these stories are also interesting as instances of a concept and practice thas has received little critical attention so far, namely 'analogy', the writing and, above all, recognition of 'similar' stories. How to account for the literary practice that enables us to perceive stories as similar, c.q. analogous? This original study sets out to explore this phenomenon, first tentatively vis-?)vis other terms and practices (Translation, Borrowing, Adaptation, Version) and then, in the major part of the book, in a pragmatic-structuralist analysis of four salient components of narrative--Plot, Character, Thematics, and Genre--each illustrated with examples taken from Chaucer's fabliaux and their analogues in various European languages.In each of the four chapters the key-issue is Categorisation and Hertog traces its evolution and usefulness a a concept from Wittgenstein's family resemblances' and Zadeh's 'fuzzy set theory' to E. Rosch's Prototype theory. The conclusion draws attention to two aspects which set Chaucer's fabliaux very much apart from the other analogues: their contextuality within the polylogue of the Canterbury Tales, and secondly, their explicit intertextuality which invites us to look anew at the assumptions of traditional source-criticism. The study ends with some theoretical reflections on analogy and an attempt at definition.The book will interest not only Chaucerians and other medievalists but also scholars in literarry theory and interpretation.
