Paving the Way evaluates the early encounters between the Tillamook and foreign visitors. Each exploratory period between 1760 and 1851 had unique social and cross-cultural contact. This contact laid the foundation for acceptance of later permanent settlers. Each of these stages introduced the Tillamook to different foreign behaviors and customs. The socialization that resulted from these encounters provided the Tillamook with context to form their own opinions on the incoming foreigners. Without these early interactions the Tillamook may not have approached the Lady Washington to trade in 1788. Even after this event the Tillamooks needed the contact that resulted from the different stages of development in order to understand the actions of various individuals that came to their territory. This understanding contributed to the later acceptance of Tillamook County's first pioneer settler Joseph Champion and the many men and women that came after. Themes discussed in this research include socialization, kinship relations, fur trade society, intercultural diplomacy, children of multiheritage, and Euro-American society's expectations and influence.
