What do variables really tell us? When exactly do inventions occur? Why do we always miss turning points as they transpire? When does what doesn't happen mean as much, if not more, than what does? Andrew Abbott considers these fascinating questions in Time Matters, a diverse series of essays that constitutes the most extensive analysis of temporality in social science today. Ranging from abstract theoretical reflection to pointed methodological critique, Abbott demonstrates the inevitably theoretical character of any methodology. Time Matters focuses particularly on questions of time, events, and causality. Abbott grounds each essay in straightforward examinations of actual social scientific analyses. Throughout, he demonstrates the crucial assumptions we make about causes and events, about actors and interaction and about time and meaning every time we employ methods of social analysis, whether in academic disciplines, market research, public opinion polling, or even evaluation research. Turning current assumptions on their heads, Abbott not only outlines the theoretical orthodoxies of empirical social science, he sketches new alternatives, laying down foundations for a new body of social theory.

On Time and Method is a systematic, detailed treatment of how temporal factors enter research methodology, how they can affect the outcomes and interpretations of those studies, and how attention to them can strengthen research practice. The authors discuss temporal factors inherent in causal inference and the assumptions researchers make about them, temporal factors involved in choosing and constructing research strategies and research designs, and finally temporal factors in measurement and manipulation of variables. Extended examples on how such factors can operate in actual research programmes are provided.

The endurance time method (ETM) is a seismic analysis procedure in which intensifying dynamic excitations are used as the loading function, and it provides many unique benefits in the design of structures. It can largely reduce the computational effort needed for the response history analysis of structures. This aids in the practical application of response history-based analysis in problems involving very large models and/or requiring numerous analyses to achieve optimal design goals. A single response history analysis through ETM provides an estimate of the system response at the entire range of seismic intensities of interest, thus making it ideal for applications such as seismic risk assessment, life-cycle cost analysis, and value-based seismic design. Conceptual simplicity also makes ETM a useful tool for preliminary response history analysis of structural systems. Features: Presents full coverage of the subject from basic concepts to advanced applied topics. Provides a coherent text on endurance time excitation functions that are essential in endurance time analysis. Seismic Analysis and Design using the Endurance Time Method serves as a comprehensive resource for students, researchers, and practicing structural engineers who want to familiarize themselves with the concepts and applications of the endurance time method (ETM) as a useful tool for dynamic structural analysis.

Knowing about the time of death is often the central key to solving criminal cases. The time of death is also relevant in cases of natural death - for the family register entry, for the insurance system or the succession... However, the forensic medical estimation of the time of death (postmortal interval) is still not without limitations - especially if it should be precise or if it cannot be done relatively immediately after onset of death. With the onset of death, various processes begin to set in place that change a corpse and its tissues over the time axis. If it were possible to find a process in a certain tissue that would behave precisely like one or, better, several clockworks, and if it were still possible to reset the time to the state before or at the time of death, if it would also be possible that these synchronous clocks run again, and if it were also possible to run the elapsed time after death in real time on the identical individual to be examined or the identical examination object under comparable conditions (simulation), the perfect and most precise method for determining the time of death would be born. The author of the present work has observed that teeth of dead appear much brighter, differently coloured and less translucent and more opaque than teeth of living people and that dental colour changes are based on reversible drying and liquid absorption processes and can be measured with high precision and very differentiated values - he revealed phenomena, paradoxes, dynamics and liquid flow and articulates the "dental fingerprint" for identification, "tooth clock", "tooth memory" ... He measures the loss of liquid in ranges of up to one millionth of a gram, in the microgram range, as well as the colour and reflection spectra with high-precision measuring systems and he sees a fundamental possibility in the use of processes that he has measured and analyzed on drying and liquid-absorbing teeth and he is presenting a novel method for the first time. Furthermore, for the first time, he also presents a reference-independent approach (perhaps the first reference-independent analysis or measurement method in the natural sciences) based on drying up to the time of the first measurement, liquid storage and repeated drying - the actual simulation. For this reference-independent method approach, in contrast to his reference-dependent method, it does not necessarily need reference values, i.e. values that had to be obtained beforehand on other, comparable samples (see nomogram), but only values that were obtained previously on the identical object. For the first time, the "scattering problem" was circumvented - the way to a high-precision method? The novel method of analyzing and measuring the time of death seems to have a number of advantages: objectifying measurement instead of subjective estimations of stages; several independent values, such as L *, a *, b *, C *, h, M, spectral values, instead of just one numerical value (temperature in degrees) in the case of the body cooling method, reversibility instead of irreversibility of the processes and thus, after sufficient liquid storage, repeatability of the post-mortem conditions and consequently the post-mortem interval up to the first measurement in the context of a simulation under comparable conditions on the identical object and thus avoidance of the "scattering problem", avoidance of intra- and inter-individual differences on both sides of the autopsy table - for the estimating and for the estimated individual, time of death measurement on site or high-precision measurements with high-precision positioning systems instead of measurement with thermometers, in the author's vision, comfortable measurements of various samples independently of one another within an automatic analyzer simulating ambient conditions in the laboratory instead ... - A breakthrough?

Hrt Hoodtm A Structured Design Method For Hard Real Time Ada Systems written by A. Burns and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-04-07 with Computers categories.

The increasing use of computers for real-time control on board spacecrafts has brought with it a greater emphasis on the development methodology used for such systems. By their nature, spacecraft control computers have to operate unattended for long periods and because of the programmatics of space, systems are subject to a long development cycle. As a result, there are two distinct concerns, the first being that the development approach guarantees functional and timing correctness, the second being that problems, particularly those associated with timing, are considered as early as possible in the spacecraft development life cycle. The European Space Agency has, for a number of years, encouraged the development of software using HOOD. It was thus a natural next step to investigate the incorporation of time within the existing HOOD framework. This has proven to be very beneficial and this book describes the approach developed by the authors for handling Hard Real-Time applications. It describes both the background scheduling theory, provides practical examples of its application to real life problems, and demonstrates how it is used in the various phases of the development of Hard Real-Time systems.

When we read the works of Homer, or Virgil, or Plato, or turn to the later productions of Dante, of Shakespeare, of Milton, and the host of writers and poets who have done so much to instruct and amuse us, and to make our lives good and agreeable, we are apt to look with some disappointment upon present times. And when we turn to the field of art and compare Greek statues and Gothic or Renaissance architecture with our modern efforts, we must feel bound to admit our inferiority to our ancestors. And this leads us perhaps to question whether our age is the equal of those which have gone before, or whether the human intellect is not on the decline. This feeling, however, proceeds from a failure to remember that each age of the world has its peculiar points of strength, as well as of weakness. During one period that self-denying patriotism and zeal for the common good will be developing, which2 is necessary for the formation of society. During another, the study of the principles of morality and religion will be in the ascendant. During another the arts will take the lead; during another, poetry, tragedy, and lyric poetry and prose will be cultivated; during another, music will take its turn, and out of rude peasant songs will evolve the harmony of the opera. To our age is reserved the glory of being easily the foremost in scientific discovery.

Time Series Analysis Of Discourse written by Dennis Tay and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-11-23 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This volume serves as a comprehensive introduction to Time Series Analysis (TSA), used commonly in financial and engineering sciences, to demonstrate its potential to complement qualitative approaches in discourse analysis research. The book begins by discussing how time has previously been conceptualized in the literature, drawing on studies from variationist sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, and Critical Discourse Analysis. The volume then segues into a discussion of how TSA is applied in other contexts in which observed values are expected to be dependent on earlier values, such as stock markets and sales figures, and introduces a range of discourse-specific contexts to show how the technique might be extended to analyze trends or shed further light on relevant themes in discourse over time. Each successive chapter features a different discourse context as a case study, from psychotherapy sessions, university lectures, and news articles, and looks at how studying different variables over time in each context – metaphors, involvement markers, and keywords, respectively – can contribute to a greater understanding of both present and future discourse activity in these settings. Taken together, this book highlights the value of TSA as a complementary approach to meaning-based analysis in discourse, making this ideal reading for graduate students and scholars in discourse analysis looking to employ quantitative methods in their research practice.
