Time capsules have been used for thousands of years to store for posterity a selection of objects thought to be representative of life at a particular time. Such vessels have the dual purpose of causing participants to ponder their own cultural era and think about those to come. This work is a cultural history of five thousand years of time capsules and other related time-information transfer experiences. It examines both the formal and the popular culture aspects of the time capsule, from its roots in ancient Mesopotamian and Egyptian building foundation deposits to the present utilization of spacecraft probes and other extreme locations. The deposits of 3000 BCE deliberately had no definite date and time to be opened; in 1876 CE came the idea of target-dated deposits. Also discussed are how "real" time capsules work, notional and archaeological time capsules, the height of the time capsule's popularity from 1935 to 1982, the preservation of writings in time capsules, keeping time in a perpetual futurescape, and turn of the century hype surrounding millennium time capsules.

The joy a child finds in making their own time capsule, filled with everyday objects, comes alive in this inviting picture book from the MacArthur “genius grant” recipient and award-winning author of Radioactive. A set of dice. A grandmother’s ring. The key to an old house. A child gathers keepsakes from everyday life, seals them in a jar, and buries them underground. A gift from the present day…to people of the future…that tells a story about the past. A time capsule. The first book for children by renowned artist and writer Lauren Redniss will get readers thinking about the times they are living through and how their world will be remembered in ages to come. It will also spark creativity, inviting young people to envision the future and to make their own time capsules. Extra pages in the back include tips on making your own time capsule and facts about different kinds of time capsules in history.

Come along to McHenry. Nestled between the Fox River and McCullom Lake, it is a friendly, welcoming city with a rich history. It was designated as the first county seat of the newly formed McHenry County in 1837. Its surrounding farmland provided both food from its crops and milk from its cows to the Chicago area. Diverse businesses such as boatbuilders, ice cutters, lumber companies, flour mills, brick makers, and cigar makers chose to make McHenry their home. It is a unique city that grew as three separate business districts: along the river, along the railroad, and one in between. Known as the gateway to the Chain of Lakes, tourism thrived in the early 1900s as visitors from Chicago made McHenry their recreational destination. In McHenry and McCullom Lake, one will meet the people who helped change McHenry from a collection of log cabins on the riverfront to a bustling city with a population of 24,000.
