Time in Africa: Flying and Fun from 1963 to 1983 covers 20 amazing years of David Price’s life as a pilot, working primarily in Africa. Although filled with personal adventures and humorous anecdotes, Time in Africa is much more than an autobiography. It is also an amazing glimpse of a time in aviation before computerized flight controls and when some older planes were still made of plywood and canvas. Having flown planes such as a DC3, Dove, Comet 4, Viscount, B737 and B707, the author shares stories of near disaster, having to make mechanical repairs and adjustments while flying—including once with a fire ax, and landing and taking off in the desert without a runway. Adding further interest to these stories is the setting: Libya, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Cameroon, Zambia, Guinea, and Nigeria in their early days of independence post colonization. A natural storyteller, David portrays what life was like in Africa—both for the privileged Whites and the native Blacks—along with providing insight into the politics and attitudes of the time. From starting an airplane with car batteries strapped to a baggage trolley to having to put out a charcoal fire started in the aisle of a plane to brew a cup of tea, it is clear that there were few dull moments during David’s time as a pilot in Africa. It is also evident that he enjoyed every minute there, as will his readers as he takes them back to an amazing place in an interesting time.

Two white middle-aged, middle-class scholars (William is at Sarah Lawrence College; Bonnie is a writer) went with their teenage son to teach at Makerere U. in Kampala for two years. Although active in the Episcopal Church, their mission was to learn about faith related to "the sacredness of ordinary encounter" rather than to proselytize. Their journal essays and poems center on war victims, poverty, literary/democratic nation building, new friends and other gifts of daily living. Where do things stand today in Africa, after some 56 years of independence? Well, the continent is not just a land of crises and hardships; it also has what it takes to become emergent this 21st century – abundant natural resources, a youthful and dynamic population, a great potential for growth, etc. But most wounds inflicted by the colonial and neocolonial systems to date remain unhealed. Africans therefore have three crucial prerequisites to fulfill for their continent’s renaissance: regain their lost cultural balance, put in place a solid economic backbone, and promote a leadership committed to good governance and continental integration. In this illuminating book written from a refreshing African perspective, the author examines the facts and shares his deep conviction – without indulging in angst or finger-pointing– that Africans should build their continent’s emergence on a great sense of patriotism combined with sound preparation and intelligent cooperation, bearing in mind the potent examples set by Nelson Mandela, Thomas Sankara and other world political icons.

No one thought he'd ever dare to return. In this African country where the dictatorship has banned all forms of cultural expression, the storyteller named Once-Upon-A-Time has already had a brush with death. For refusing to stop performing his puppet shows, he lost both his hands, severed at the wrist with the slash of a machete. Now he's back, ready to begin performing again, and ready to take on the powers that be...

Space And Time In African Cinema And Cine Scapes written by Kenneth W. Harrow and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-06-28 with Performing Arts categories.

This book is the first of its kind to bring basic notions of contemporary physics to bear on African cine-scapes. In this book, renowned African cinema scholar Kenneth W. Harrow presents unique new ways to think about space and time in film, with a specific focus on African and African diasporic cinema. Through a series of case studies, he explores how cinema creates and represents time and space and, more specifically, how a cinema centered in African landscapes and figures accomplishes this. He reflects on the issues and problems posed by scientists when faced with the basic questions of what space and time are and their solutions or conclusions, giving both film studies and African studies scholars access to new ways to formulate their thinking about African cine-scapes. Working beyond the limits of a framework based in a postcolonial and cultural understanding of time and space, Harrow demonstrates how a scientific understanding of time and space can open up new approaches to African cinema and cinema in general. A unique, interdisciplinary book that encourages brand new ways to approach cinematic texts and, specifically, African cine-scapes.
