The purpose of the study is to develop and test a modification of the standard theory of consumer demand that yields implications concerning the consumer's allocation of time to consumption and income producing activities. Unlike the demand for leisure model, the theory does not treat leisure as a good or work as a bad. The consumer's time does not enter his utility function, only the quantities of goods consumed do. The consumer's time enters his budget constraint only. At a sufficiently high level of income, time may also become an additional constraint independent of the budget constraint. The principal hypothesis of the theory is that each good has a money price and a foregone earnings cost. (Author).

The addition of time in the consumer's budget yields new theorems from demand theory while preserving the (logical) validity of the old ones. These new theorems concern additional Slutsky type equations relating quantities of goods demanded, hours worked, and total income to the wage rate, non-wage or time-independent income, and the relative time or price intensity of goods; the Slutsky equations with respect to price are preserved. The new equations place additional behavioral restrictions upon the standard consumer demand functions and permit the consumer's labor supply to be derived from his demand for goods. Since all the theory's variables are observable, it can be tested by estimating these functions. (Author).

A conical model in the management of queuing systems assumes that consumers base the purchase of a service on its full price, i.e., a linear combination of the monetary price and the expected time commitment. While analytically convenient, when this assumption holds is an unexplored question. We present a model of consumers allocating their time and money between working, overhead activities that do not provide utility, one continuous leisure activity, and one discrete service. Both continuous leisure activity and discrete service increase utility. Consumers can allocate any non-negative amount of time or money to the leisure activity. Consumption of the discrete service requires a fixed amount of time and money. We examine when the decision to purchase the discrete service depends only on its full price. The full-price assumption does hold--in limited cases. Specifically, it depends on how consumers are paid. If consumers completely control the amount of time they work and earn a constant wage, they base their purchase decision on the full price. If, however, they must work a fixed shift length, the assumption fails and the full price is not sufficient to determine the consumer's action. We show that how the pay structure affects the pricing of service depends on the shift length. If the consumers must work longer than would be optimal if they controlled their schedule and earned the same hourly wage, i.e., the consumers are overemployed shift workers, a seller raises its price (relative to selling to consumers who control their work hours) and the system is less congested. The reverse holds if the consumers would prefer to work longer at the offered wage; i.e., the consumers are underemployed shift workers. It is crucial for service providers to take prevailing compensation structures of the community they serve into consideration when it comes to service design and service pricing. We show that a seller earns more when its consumers completely control their schedule.

Home production not only requires money to buy market goods but also varying degrees of time to shop and to prepare consumption goods. Households' time budgets therefore affect their use of the market and the bundle of market goods chosen. Using a novel household panel data set that combines purchase records with time-budget shifting labor-events, and controlling for demographics, this paper shows how the availability of time affects purchasing behavior. We first find that more discretionary time, due to, e.g., retirement, leads to additional shopping trips across a more diverse set of stores, increased spending on groceries, and more diversity in products chosen. In addition, when time is less scarce, restaurant expenditures go down and grocery expenditures go up. We next classify products according to the time it takes to turn them into consumption experiences. Availability of additional time shifts a household's shopping bundle towards more time-intensive market goods. Our results suggest that product- and retail innovations aimed at forward-integrating into household production are important drivers of demand in CPG industries.

This paper aims to highlight how clauses, which are traditionally considered to be inefficient, may actually be desired by consumers. This anomaly originates from the fact that each individual builds a mental budget by dividing the money available among the needs they intend to satisfy. According to consumers' reasoning, money is not fungible, in the sense that amounts cannot be transferred from one expenditure to another. Consumers who behave in this way may sometimes find that they have depleted the amount they budgeted for an item while wanting to buy more of it. Since additional time, efforts and risks are not included in the budget, consumers accept clauses that are traditionally considered to be inefficient, thereby staying within their budget while increasing the amount they can spend for a given good. Thus, for example, since additional time and effort are not allowed for in the budget, a consumer will be willing to make a sacrifice with a value of six for a service that would cost the producer three. This is apparently an inefficient solution, but allows the consumer to stay within their budget.
