Who has time these days? Any moments that haven’t already been accounted for are swallowed up by smartphones, social media and working into the evening hours. But stress also comes from within; if you learn to time surf you will rediscover calm in your life. This book will inspire and guide you to choose peace as a basis for carrying out all your daily activities, whether at work or in the home. The approach is based on a step-by-step method called Time Surfing, which consists of seven simple and easy-to-learn instructions backed with targeted tips and techniques. Routed in Zen Buddhism, the emphasis is very much on making the most of the time you have rather than trying to control time itself. Suitable for everyone, Time Surfing is based on your natural behaviour; the more you apply the instructions the easier it becomes. The instructions will feel instinctive, and will make it possible for you to surf over the waves of time. You will learn that you can trust your intuition when it comes to choosing what to do. As a result, your actions are not only inspired but also very effective. The focus you experience will be relaxed and unforced. But, more than anything else, an inner sense of calm will arise. Time Surfing has proven popular in the business world. Companies and occupational health organisations such as Delta Lloyd, the Trimbos Instituut and De Persgroep are introducing their employees to the Time Surfing techniques.

Winner of the Pulitzer Price and William Hill Sports Book of the Year: Barbarian Days is a deeply rendered self-portrait of a lifelong surfer looking for transcendence 'that recalls early James Salter' (Geoff Dyer, Observer) Surfing only looks like a sport. To devotees, it is something else entirely: a beautiful addiction, a mental and physical study, a passionate way of life. New Yorker writer William Finnegan first started surfing as a young boy in California and Hawaii. Barbarian Days is his immersive memoir of a life spent travelling the world chasing waves through the South Pacific, Australia, Asia, Africa and beyond. Finnegan describes the edgy yet enduring brotherhood forged among the swell of the surf; and recalling his own apprenticeship to the world's most famous and challenging waves, he considers the intense relationship formed between man, board and water. Barbarian Days is an old-school adventure story, a social history, an extraordinary exploration of one man's gradual mastering of an exacting and little-understood art. It is a memoir of dangerous obsession and enchantment. 'Reading this guy on the subject of waves and water is like reading Hemingway on bullfighting; William Burroughs on controlled substances; Updike on adultery. . . . a coming-of-age story, seen through the gloss resin coat of a surfboard' Sports Illustrated

Surfing is a surface water sport in which an individual, a surfer, uses a board to ride on the forward section, or face, of a moving wave of water, which usually carries the surfer towards the shore. Do you remember your thundering heartbeat on that first BIG day? Or the pure joy of those early morning paddle-outs with your original set of surf buddies? Or the uncertainty of splashing into a 45-degree winter ocean while encased in more rubber than the Creature from the Black Lagoon\?Then spin your board around and drop into this captivating set of surf stories. But don't worry if you've never climbed into a Michelin Man-like layer of neoprene for a wintertime wave fix. All you need to enjoy Surf Lessons is your sense of adventure and a sense of humor. And be ready to shake the sand from your trunks and the water from your ears as you turn the final page.

Surfing Through Time is a two-volume set about "surfing for life." In the last several years, things have transpired that inspired me to write a life history of "Surfing Through Time." covering fifty-five years. It has been a process, like the genesis of most books.I wanted to answer some questions of and for myself. My answers may, in some way I hope, help you answer questions of and for yourselves. Your questions may look very different, but my description of both the underlying principles and the decision processes may help, since I think those aspects are appropriate to the experiences of all of us.Anyway, Book One is the story of creating one of the first beach side surfboard shops in New England in 1964, and then extending that (as the surfing wave swelled) to five shops over the period 1964-1968. The book celebrates all the people involved, and most of all, all the young people who started to surf during that period and have carried fond memories and a love for the ocean in both their bodies and their hearts to this day. What we learned about life, opportunity, challenges, and our own characters and skills has served us well, I believe. it also talks a good deal about a gentleman named Hobie Alter, who served as a kind mentor to me and is renowned for fostering surfing, making beautiful surfboards, and creating the "Hobie Cat" catamaran sailboat. I wrote my Harvard Business School Thesis on the Hobie Surfboard Company, and the thesis is included as an appendix to Book One.Surfing Through Time Book Two will be out shortly. It extends the "surfing for life" adventures, fleshing out a story of both family and business life by adding a recreational third leg, "soul surfing" for fifty additional years. In my case, I believe I couldn't have achieved what I did without the contribution of practicing my favorite sport in the oceans worldwide. In each of the two books, I have tried to bring out the value of living life fully, treating the challenges and life lessons, and forming "precepts" which might be helpful you as well. One more thing about Surfing Through Time Book One, A Real 'Startup' - Surfing In New England 1964-1968 is that this narrative has also been well treated by famed filmmaker Will Lucas in his documentary film "Origins - The Narragansett Surf Shops1964-1967." Much of the source material for Book One of "Surfing Through Time" and for the movie is common, and I am indebted to Will for his sensitivity and fidelity. Sadly, Will Lucas died in July of 2018, and my urgency in completing this narrative was magnified. As reiterated throughout, surfing is and was important to me, and both the sport and the concept have, undeniably, I suggest, become important in and to the culture. I wanted to write about those "waves," and to tie life and surfing's threads into one person's eighty year ocean tapestry. So why two books, and what are the underlying threads between the two (which, in many ways, is also a core thread in the movie "Origins...")? I guess the key thread is "Surfing For Life," which was actually an alternative title we considered for this book. Anyway, it is the story of our establishment of a surfboard business and the extension of the surfing culture in New England from its earliest roots to a robust wave which is still cresting, 50 years later. I hope you like it.

It S Great To Suck At Something written by Karen Rinaldi and has been published by Atria Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-05-07 with Self-Help categories.

Discover how the freedom of sucking at something can help you build resilience, embrace imperfection, and find joy in the pursuit rather than the goal. What if the secret to resilience and joy is the one thing we’ve been taught to avoid? When was the last time you tried something new? Something that won’t make you more productive, make you more money, or check anything off your to-do list? Something you’re really, really bad at, but that brought you joy? Odds are, not recently. As a sh*tty surfer and all-around-imperfect human Karen Rinaldi explains in this eye-opening book, we live in a time of aspirational psychoses. We humblebrag about how hard we work and we prioritize productivity over play. Even kids don’t play for the sake of playing anymore: they’re building blocks to build the ideal college application. But we’re all being had. We’re told to be the best or nothing at all. We’re trapped in an epic and farcical quest for perfection. We judge others on stuff we can’t even begin to master, and it’s all making us more anxious and depressed than ever. Worse, we’re not improving on what really matters. This book provides the antidote. (It’s Great to) Suck at Something reveals that the key to a richer, more fulfilling life is finding something to suck at. Drawing on her personal experience sucking at surfing (a sport she’s dedicated nearly two decades of her life to doing without ever coming close to getting good at it) along with philosophy, literature, and the latest science, Rinaldi explores sucking as a lost art we must reclaim for our health and our sanity and helps us find the way to our own riotous suck-ability. She draws from sources as diverse as Anthony Bourdain and surfing luminary Jaimal Yogis, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Jean-Paul Sartre, among many others, and explains the marvelous things that happen to our mammalian brains when we try something new, all to discover what she’s learned firsthand: it is great to suck at something. Sucking at something rewires our brain in positive ways, helps us cultivate grit, and inspires us to find joy in the process, without obsessing about the destination. Ultimately, it gives you freedom: the freedom to suck without caring is revelatory. Coupling honest, hilarious storytelling with unexpected insights, (It’s Great to) Suck at Something is an invitation to embrace our shortcomings as the very best of who we are and to open ourselves up to adventure, where we may not find what we thought we were looking for, but something way more important.
