Questo libro è stato realizzato per celebrare il centenario della nascita di Ugo Guerra, nato a Roma il 21 agosto 1920. Ugo Guerra era una persona speciale, consapevole di esserlo; era dotato di un carisma innegabile e di un’eleganza fuori dal comune, che lo rendevano convincente ed affascinante ma anche profondamente e intimamente capace di empatizzare con la debolezza e la fragilità della condizione umana. Nel suo lavoro sono state presenti fin da subito, quasi profeticamente, le premesse per percepire e comprendere ciò di cui la sua esistenza l’ha reso testimone. Laureato in Scienze politiche, cominciò a lavorare come giornalista per diverse testate, soprattutto come critico teatrale. Dopo aver scritto per il teatro – suo l’atto unico Pirandelliana – dal 1951 si dedicò alla scrittura di soggetti e sceneggiature per il cinema, firmando decine di film, che gli hanno permesso di esprimere la sua sensibilità, il suo spirito critico, il suo disincanto, la sua finezza e la sua vena ironica. Ricordiamo, tra i tanti, Amici per la pelle e Morte di un amico, che hanno dato inizio alla collaborazione con Franco Rossi che sarebbe rimasta una costante della sua attività, Il Seduttore, Mio figlio Nerone, Costa Azzurra e Il Vigile, nei quali Alberto Sordi ha potuto manifestare la sua duttilità di interprete, Suor Letizia, con Anna Magnani, Via Margutta, Le Signore, I due marescialli, Marte, dio della guerra, La pupa, La ragazzola, Mogli pericolose, Mariti in pericolo, Tutti innamorati, Cin Cin... cianuro!. L’attività nel mondo cinematografico finì con il limitare il lavoro giornalistico di Ugo Guerra, che aveva continuato a collaborare saltuariamente con quotidiani e periodici, fino a costringerlo a rinunciarvi definitivamente. Dalla fine degli anni Sessanta, rimanendo nel mondo del cinema, intraprese la carriera di produttore che lo portò a realizzare opere come I Clowns di Federico Fellini e l’Eneide, ancora con Franco Rossi. Nel 1970, un gravissimo ictus cerebrale rivoluzionò bruscamente la sua vita. Dopo un anno trascorso in clinica, fu trasferito in casa, dove continuò le terapie riabilitative per tutto il resto della sua esistenza, fino al 1983. Ma non riacquistò l’uso della parola né il controllo dei movimenti, se si eccettua quello dell’avambraccio e della mano destra. La volontà di comunicare e la lucidità intellettiva gli hanno permesso, nonostante tutto, di continuare ad essere presente e attivo nella vita dei suoi cari, attento al mondo che lo circondava, critico, emozionabile, tenero, intelligente, arguto, sottile, ironico, sensibile, triste, affettuoso così come tutti quelli che l’hanno conosciuto, prima e dopo, se lo ricordano. E da persona speciale qual era ha voluto lasciare un segno tangibile della sua volontà di narrare, di raccontare storie emozionando i lettori o gli spettatori. Quel segno che è stato il tratto distintivo della sua vita e della sua professione. Ugo Guerra aveva tanto da dire e tanto ci ha lasciato, aiutandoci a capire in profondità le fragilità e le debolezze di tutti noi, raccontate con il suo stile lineare e composto, penetrate con l’intima capacità di sentire il dolore degli altri, di osservarlo con tenerezza ed empatia, ma senza compiacimenti, così come ha saputo affrontare il proprio. Ugo Guerra, noto anche con lo pseudonimo di Robert Hugo (Roma, 1920 – 1982), è stato uno sceneggiatore e produttore cinematografico italiano. Ha lavorato come sceneggiatore su circa 60 film dal 1950 al 1970, ed è stato anche produttore di una decina di film.
