Dobbiamo scavare come archeologi ed esplorare i nostri paesaggi violati in cerca di qualcosa di nuovo». È questa frase di Werner Herzog uno dei punti di partenza del percorso del volume. Un percorso che riattraversa il cinema del regista tedesco come ricerca incessante di immagini nuove, che attingono però la loro potenza dal passato, che sono spesso nascoste, invisibili, che necessitano di un lavoro di scavo per venire alla luce. Immagini di per sé anacronistiche. È qui che il cinema herzoghiano incontra il pensiero di Aby Warburg e la sua straordinaria teoria delle immagini. I concetti di Warburg – come quello di Orientamento, Polarità, Sopravvivenza, Intervallo – si rivelano allora potenti forme del cinema se rivisti a partire dalle immagini di Herzog. Le immagini in cammino, secondo un’idea di montaggio aperta a salti e nuove connessioni; le immagini danzanti, ipnotiche e capaci di evocare tempi diversi; le immagini che si elevano, che fanno del volo, dell’estasi (come anche della caduta e della catastrofe), il loro destino. I vulcani de La Soufrière o di Dentro l’inferno, i fiumi di Aguirre o di Fizcarraldo, le montagne di Grido di pietra o Cuore di vetro, i corpi eccedenti e folli di tanti film herzoghiani diventano allora alcune delle forme con cui il cinema svela la sua potenza anacronistica, che lo rende ancora una volta un’arte contemporanea.
