He was the scum of the earth; one of the most despicable human beings God could have every have created. A trickster and a crook of the lowest level, and despised by even his own mother, he prowled on the gritty streets of Brooklyn, like a hearetless predator, always looking for a vulnerable female to exploit. This he did until he met a decent Christian girl, whose world was light years away from his, and his life would change in ways that even he could never have dreamed of.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER A travel narrative following three ancient roads and looking at more than two thousand years of history of Ancient Rome through the modern eye. In 66 b.c., young, ambitious Julius Caesar, seeking recognition and authority, became the curator of the Via Appia, a road stretching from Rome to Brindisi. To gain popularity with Roman citizens along the way, he borrowed significant sums to restore the ancient highway. He eventually achieved greatness in Rome and the far reaches of Gaul, leading armies along the Via Appia and its sister road, the Via Egnatia, across the Balkans, to battle enemies in Roman civil wars. Other armies followed these two roads that eventually connected Rome to Constantinople, today’s Istanbul. Both Octavian and, later, his friend-turned enemy Mark Antony traveled portions of these roads to defeat Caesar’s murderers, Brutus and Cassius. The great Roman statesman Cicero, the Roman poet Homer, the historian Virgil, and many other notables also journeyed on them. In the early second century a.d., the emperor Trajan charted a new, faster, coastal route between Benevento and Brindisi, later called the Via Traiana. Today, the remains of these roads are preserved as archaeological wonders, and can be seen through the countryside near, and sometimes under, modern highways in the ruins of ancient Roman cities. Some of the earliest villages have disappeared, while others have grown into modern towns with the ancient roads hidden beneath latter-day pavements. In this sojourn across Roman history, John Keahey delves into encounters with diverse peoples in these towns in Italy, North Macedonia, Greece, and Turkey, who warmly embrace travelers following in the footsteps of their ancestors. They shared knowledge of historical sites, meals, and a wealth of local lore. Keahey’s unparalleled storytelling breathes life into the prominent figures, pivotal events, and ancient roads that paved the way for the rise and endurance of the Roman empire. It is a journey full of adventure, discovery, and friendship.

This book documents through first-hand experience and academic research the historical, cultural and economic interactions affecting land use in Singapore. Offering a unique study of nostalgia in Singaporean heritage, it discusses the subjective nostalgic meanings and interpretations that users of peripheral, heritage and green spaces in Singapore create and maintain, through a combination of informal observations and interactions combined with research into local history and heritage. It addresses the subjective meaning-making processes of individuals within the larger theoretical frameworks that structure understandings of changing land use and economical changes which impact on contemporary cityscapes, centered around peripheral and de-privileged areas of Singapore’s economic development.

2023 Vulgar Genius Nonfiction Award 2022 Writer's League of Texas Nonfiction Book Award Growing up in a small town in South Texas in the eighties and nineties, poverty, machismo, and drug addiction were everywhere for Tomás Q. Morín. He was around four or five years old when he first remembers his father cooking heroin, and he recalls many times he and his mother accompanied his father while he was on the hunt for more, Morín in the back seat keeping an eye out for unmarked cop cars, just as his father taught him. It was on one of these drives that, for the first time, he blinked in a way that evolution hadn't intended. Let Me Count the Ways is the memoir of a journey into obsessive-compulsive disorder, a mechanism to survive a childhood filled with pain, violence, and unpredictability. Morín's compulsions were a way to hold onto his love for his family in uncertain times until OCD became a prison he struggled for decades to escape. Tender, unflinching, and even funny, this vivid portrait of South Texas life challenges our ideas about fatherhood, drug abuse, and mental illness.

It’s the first thing they teach you when you start school. But they don’t need to; your parents tell you when you’re first learning how to say your name. It’s drummed into you whilst you’re taking your first stumbling steps. It’s your lullaby. From the moment it first appears, you don’t tell anyone the name on your wrist. In Corin's world, your carpinomen - the name of your soul mate, marked indelibly on your wrist from the age of two or three - is everything. It's your most preciously guarded secret; a piece of knowledge that can give another person ultimate power over you. People spend years, even decades, searching for the one they're supposed to be with. But what if you never find that person? Or you do, but you just don't love them? What if you fall for someone else - someone other than the name on your wrist? And what if - like Corin - the last thing in the world you want is to be found? The gripping debut novel from the winner of the inaugural Sony Young Movellist Award.

This book is a sweeping volume of captivating true incidents arranged chronologically. Starting with my childhood (crawl, walk and run) development in a remote village. During pre-adulthood days I learnt a lot from nature. The book also relates to my tryst with Lady Death on three occasions I also had close encounters with Jawaharlal Nehru, our First Prime Minister, Dr. Rajinder Prasad, the first President of an Independent India, Lord Mountbatten the last Viceroy, Raja Gopalacharya, India’s first Governor, and dozens others, who made a difference in my life. There are chapters on my teenage, graduate schooling in the only American campus in the whole Southeast Asia. The looting on the train to Bombay, when my tickets for travel by ship to UK were robbed during severe Hindu/Muslim riots. The partition of India was the most cruel, vicious, and poisonous scorch earth policy, which sandwiched India between two fanatic hateful Muslim wings, speaking different languages. I was a non-violent Satyagrahi Student volunteer under Mahatma Gandhi, participating in his “Quit India” scheme. Yet I traveled like a stow-away sardine, along with 10000 British Soldiers who had to Quit under that very scheme.
