Csontváry Kosztka Tivadar (1853-1919) Csontváry Kosztka Tivadart 27 évesen, iglói patikussegédként, váratlanul érintette meg a művészet. „Egy napon a gyógyszertár elé állott egy fával megrakott ökrösszekér; az ökrök bubiskoltak, s én egy vénypapírra ezt a jelenetet fölrajzoltam. Iglóról egyenesen Rómába siettem, ahol több hónapi tanulmányozás után arra határoztam el magamat, hogy húsz esztendeig kell dolgoznom, s akkor utolérem a nagyokat, avagy túlszárnyalom. Rómából Eszékre kerültem gyógyszerésznek; ott lepett meg Munkácsy Pilátusának a híre, s nekem ezt látnom kellett Budapesten. Egy évre rá Párisban azon tűnődve, hogy győzzem le a nagy nehézségeket? Segíteni senki sem segít. Komoly tervvel siettem haza s Gács községben nyitottam gyógyszertárt, ahol néhány évig lankadatlan szorgalommal oda jutottam, hogy gyógyszertáram adósságmentesen állott, s amikor már száz koronát havonta jövedelmezett, bérbe adva, elmentem Münchenbe a Hollósy iskolájába, rajzolni természet után. Hat hónap után Münchenből b. Liezen-Mayer Sándor barátom tanácsára Karlsruhéba mentem Kahlmorgen tanárhoz, aki három hó után Itáliába küldött. Én a dalmát partokon festve csak Raguzáig értem, s innen a düsseldorfi akadémiára utaztam föl, ahol az igazgató tudtomra adá, hogy már többet tudok s iskolára szükségem nincsen. Elutaztam hát Párisba, a Julien-akadémiába iratkoztam be; de vesztemre, mert ott nem engedték meg a szabad rajzolást. Azt a formát, amit a franciák reám akartak kényszeríteni, egyszerűen visszautasítám. Így kerültem ki az akadémiákból egyenesen Pompejibe, ahol egy nagyarányú festménybe bele is fogtam. Ezek után évről évre hol, mit s minő haladással festék, egészen az 1904. évben Athénban festett Jupiter-templomig: ez az első festmény, amelyen már vásznat nem lát a szemlélő. Végül föl kell említenem, hogy a New-York Herald kritikusa egyenest kimondá, hogy minden a világon létező festmény túl van szárnyalva; ezt a hatást csak húszévi komoly munka után vártam, s hogy előbb következett be, a Teremtőnek köszönhetem és senki másnak” – írta le Csontváry a tanulóévek és az első sikerek történetét az 1908-ban, a fővárosi Iparcsarnokban rendezett kiállításának katalógusában.

Béla Bartók, who died in New York fifty years ago this September, is one of the most frequently performed twentieth-century composers. He is also the subject of a rapidly growing critical and analytical literature. Bartók was born in Hungary and made his home there for all but his last five years, when he resided in the United States. As a result, many aspects of his life and work have been accessible only to readers of Hungarian. The main goal of this volume is to provide English-speaking audiences with new insights into the life and reception of this musician, especially in Hungary. Part I begins with an essay by Leon Botstein that places Bartók in a large historical and cultural context. László Somfai reports on the catalog of Bartók's works that is currently in progress. Peter Laki shows the extremes of the composer's reception in Hungary, while Tibor Tallián surveys the often mixed reviews from the American years. The essays of Carl Leafstedt and Vera Lampert deal with his librettists Béla Balázs and Melchior Lengyel respectively.
