Excerpt from To Christ Through Criticism It has been my endeavour throughout these pages to indicate rather the trend than the result of modern religious thinking. There is an increasing number of Christian people whom the traditional presentation of Christianity - Anglican or Genevan - has ceased to influence. The imminent danger is that they, identifying Theology with Religion, Scholasticism with the Faith of Christ, may tacitly consider themselves out side the Christian Fellowship. This class I mainly had in mind as I wrote, with whose mental attitude I largely sympathise, the loss of whose virile qualities to the Church must prove an incalculable disaster. Such - reversing the orthodox procedure, but "according to Christ Jesus" - I would urge to take Him, in the first instance, as Spiritual Teacher, Guide, Master, till perchance, from their experience of "following Jesus in the way," He may at length approve Himself as indeed the Saviour Christ. Excerpt from Principles of Biblical Criticism I should hardly have ventured of my own accord to have undertaken what at the present moment is so serious a task as the attempt to write on the criticism of the Bible. But when requested by others to undertake the task I did not feel that I was justified in declining it. The question is a most important one in itself, and at the present moment it is supremely so. The defence of the traditional belief in regard to the Old Testament is at present the unpopular, or as has been suggested to me by a friend, the "unfashionable" side of the question. I am aware that in undertaking it I shall incur a great deal of hostile criticism. I have no right to shrink from such criticism. I have myself criticized freely, perhaps in some cases unsparingly, the views to which I have felt compelled to take exception. I shall therefore have no reason to complain if I am criticized unsparingly myself. I have not, however, I believe, treated any of those with whom it has been my misfortune to differ, with unfairness or disrespect. If I have misrepresented any one, I certainly have not done so intentionally. I may therefore, I trust, lay claim to candid treatment in return. Excerpt from Inspiration and Criticism Suppose the results, or some of them, true - what is our attitude to be Are we to declare them inconsistent with Inspiration, as perhaps is the first impulse of some Of us? Or are we to say that as we have found Inspiration to be quite consistent with many phenomena, which in former times seemed to be quite inconsistent with it, so we shall find in the present instance? We may have thought, as the conclusions of the Higher Criticism forced themselves on our view, accompanied as they were with a hostile attitude to all that is precious to a Christian man, that such results were quite incompatible with any doctrine of Inspiration. But a calmer reflection followed, and a closer examination of the facts; and it was seen that many things pointed out by the critics were indisputable facts of Scrip ture. What happened then was this, that we had to widen our conceptions of the phenomena Of Scripture; that the great boon Of Holy Scripture had not come to man in the simple way we had supposed; that the process of the delivery and preservation of the oracles Of God was much more com plex, and involved a much more lengthened process than we had conceived but is there anything in the discovery of this fact-supposing it to be a fact - which should interfere with the authority Of Scripture? Inspiration is consistent with all the phenomena of Scripture, and is consistent with all that the Higher Criticism can find to be true phenomena of Scripture. For my own part, I have not been able to accept all the results, either of Dr. Driver or of Delitzsch, and on the whole question a great deal of work remains to be done. But surely there is a modus vivendi possible which shall leave men like them time to work out the whole subject, without being suspected, or unduly interfered with.
