When nineteen-year-old Harriett Gold, from a prominent white family in Cornwall, Connecticut, announced in 1825 her intention to marry a Cherokee man, her shocked family initiated a spirited correspondence debating her decision to marry an Indian. Eventually, Gold's family members reconciled themselves to her wishes, and she married Elias Boudinot in 1826. After the marriage, she returned with Boudinot to the Cherokee Nation, where he went on to become a controversial political figure and editor of the first Native American newspaper. Providing rare firsthand documentation of race relations in the early nineteenth-century United States, this volume collects the Gold family correspondence during the engagement period as well as letters the young couple sent to the family describing their experiences in New Echota (capital of the Cherokee Nation) during the years prior to the Cherokee Removal. In an introduction providing historical and social contexts, Theresa Strouth Gaul offers a literary reading of the correspondence, highlighting the value of the epistolary form and the gender and racial dynamics of the exchange. As Gaul demonstrates, the correspondence provides a factual accompaniment to the many fictionalized accounts of contacts between Native Americans and Euroamericans and supports an increasing recognition that letters form an important category of literature.

In this book, the author sets out a methodology for achieving happy marriage. He starts off by noting that nowadays marriages typically breakup after about three years. Even if you remain married, affection between the two of you has died. He sets out in two chapters exactly what are the characteristics of the man or the woman who will suit you. He believes that if you do not marry someone with these characteristics, you will not have a happy marriage. Next, he believes that love and idealism are not enough to guarantee marital success. You need to work at it. But, you need to know exactly what to work at. Working without knowing what to do is at best a random process and almost always does not generate happiness. The things you need to work at are described in what he terms the "marital agreement" or the marital contract. Once you have a place an agreement and further an agreement about what each of you do then he suggests that you should work slowly, step-by-step to achieve marital bliss. He describes what could be called a "low-risk strategy" but he believes that this strategy also achieves wonderful happiness in the normal course of events. The current hit and miss approaches to marriage are high-risk, low reward. You may marry the right person or the wrong person. You do not know what you should do for marital happiness. Even if you work hard in your marriage, the chances are that your work is wasted. The author believes that whilst there is a role, a strong role for romanticism, there is also an even bigger role for science. Thinking things through properly and not being carried away with emotionality, love and romantic fiction.

Her father would once again get sandwiched in a nasty debate between the two most important women in his life. But then again, such is living. In the DOTCOM MARRIAGE ERA. Some escaped Black Hole and need to be sent back to it. On urgent basis! Are these the experiences of only one woman? No, for a book like this, a lot of interesting, intelligent and slightly frustrated women need to meet…gossip…and bitch. Are these experiences 100% real? I leave that on you to decide.
