South American Indian Languages written by Harriet E. Manelis Klein and has been published by University of Texas Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-07-20 with Social Science categories.

This book fills the crucial need for a single volume that gives broad coverage and synthesizes findings for both the general reader and the specialist. This collection of twenty-two essays from fifteen well-known scholars presents linguistic research on the indigenous languages of South America, surveying past research, providing data and analysis gathered from past and current research, and suggesting prospects for future investigation. Of interest not only to linguists but also to anthropologists, historians, and geographers, South American Indian Languages offers a wide perspective, both temporal and regional, on an area noted for its enormous linguistic diversity and for the lack of knowledge of its indigenous languages. An invaluable source book and reference tool, its appearance is especially timely when exploitation of the rich natural resources in a number of areas in South America must surely result in the demise and/or acculturation of some indigenous groups.

Other Tongues: Rethinking the Language Debates in India explores the implications of the energetic and, at times, acrimonious public debate among Indian authors and academics over the hegemonic role of Indian writing in English. From the 1960s the debate in India has centered on the role of the English language in perpetuating and maintaining the cultural and ideological aspects of imperialism. The debate received renewed attention following controversial claims by Salman Rushdie and V.S. Naipaul on the inferior status of contemporary Indian-language literatures. This volume: • offers nuanced analysis of the language, audience and canon debate; • provides a multivocal debate in which academics, writers and publishers are brought together in a multi-genre format (academic essay, interview, personal essay); • explores how translation mediates this debate and the complex choices that translation must entail. Other Tongues is the first collective study by to bring together voices from differing national, linguistic and professional contexts in an examination of the nuances of this debate over language. By creating dialogue between different stakeholders – seven scholars, three writers, and three publishers from India – the volume brings to the forefront underrepresented aspects of Indian literary culture.

Language learning, which is a conscious process, is the product of either a formal learning situation or a self-study programme (Kramina, 2000: 27). Language learning begins at birth and continues throughout life. People learn languages as they use it to communicate their thoughts, feelings, and experiences establish relationships with family members and friends, and strive to make sense and order of their world. By learning and incorporating new language structures into their repertoire and using them in a variety of contexts, people develop language fluency and proficiency. Opportunities to learn language occur first at home and it extends as children move into the larger community. Schools provide environments where students continue to develop language knowledge, skills and strategies to achieve personal, social, and academic goals. However, for many people language learning occurs through vast materials that are systematically designed to acquire languages and made available for them. 'Languages learning made easy' is a great contribution made by the present author. It is a huge compilation of languages related rules, structures, and, pictorial presentations. It is a self-study guide for many who aspire to communicate in many languages. One language serves as scaffolding for another language while learning the grammatical rules and structures. Therefore, learners can acquire languages at ease and progress stage by stage with determination. The material also covers several topics related to daily life and living environments. Having gained the basic knowledge of the words related to everyday life, learners would be able to communicate with others without any hesitation. Over and above, the material is a great asset for many who want to excel in learning languages because mastery of any language will enhance the self-confidence of the people in the society. Therefore, it is highly recommended that learners who wish to become multi-linguists must own a copy of it and immerse in joyful learning.

American Indian Languages written by Lyle Campbell and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000-09-21 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

Native American languages are spoken from Siberia to Greenland, and from the Arctic to Tierra del Fuego; they include the southernmost language of the world (Yaghan) and some of the northernmost (Eskimoan). Campbell's project is to take stock of what is currently known about the history of Native American languages and in the process examine the state of American Indian historical linguistics, and the success and failure of its various methodologies. There is remarkably little consensus in the field, largely due to the 1987 publication of Language in the Americas by Joseph Greenberg. He claimed to trace a historical relation between all American Indian languages of North and South America, implying that most of the Western Hemisphere was settled by a single wave of immigration from Asia. This has caused intense controversy and Campbell, as a leading scholar in the field, intends this volume to be, in part, a response to Greenberg. Finally, Campbell demonstrates that the historical study of Native American languages has always relied on up-to-date methodology and theoretical assumptions and did not, as is often believed, lag behind the European historical linguistic tradition.
