The Orange Line, the Ginger Line or the M25 Railway, call it what it what you will, the London Overground, born in 2007, has become one of London’s transport success stories. Running complimentary to, and in some places, in combination with, London Underground, it carries more than 180 million passengers a year on 9 lines and serves 112 stations over a combined length of more than 100 miles. An amalgamation of several commuter lines (and one London Underground Line) that ring London it now branches out to all points of the compass. Over recent years it’s also undergone unprecedented change and investment (with a few troubles along the way) with the phasing out of old and the introduction of new rolling stock. This book takes a photographic look at these changes including a look at the routes, the stations and the trains including Classes 172, 315, 317, 378 and the brand new 710s with a brief history of each. And with so much freight sharing the Overground routes this is briefly looked at as well.

Filled with color photos, a look at the variety of London’s buses in recent years. The author has set out to illustrate, in broad terms, the color and variety of London bus operation during this time of great change to bus services.

Iain Sinclair explores modern London through a day's hike around the London Overground route. Echoing his journey in London Orbital over a decade ago, Iain Sinclair narrates his second circular walk around the capital. Shortly after rush-hour and accompanied by a rambling companion, Sinclair begins walking along London's Overground network, or, 'Ginger Line'. With characteristic playfulness, detours into folk history, withering assessments of the political classes and a joyful allegiance to the ordinary oddball, Sinclair guides us on a tour of London's trendiest new transport network - and shows the shifting, changing city from new and surprising angles. 'He is incapable of writing a dull paragraph' Scotland on Sunday 'Sinclair breathes wondrous life into monstrous man-made landscapes' Times Literary Supplement 'If you are drawn to English that doesn't just sing, but sings the blues and does scat and rocks the joint, try Sinclair. His sentences deliver a rush like no one else's' Washington Post Iain Sinclair's books include London Orbital, Hackney, That Rose-Red Empire, Downriver (which won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the Encore Award) Ghost Milk and American Smoke. He lives in Hackney, East London.

Read stories inspired by the four Underground lines that run East and West through city - part of a series of twelve books tied to the twelve lines of the London Underground, as Tfl celebrates 150 years of the Tube with Penguin. The District Line: John Lanchester, author of Whoops! and Capital takes us on a whirlwind tour of the Tube to show its secrets, just how much we take for granted about it, and what we're really talking about, since we so often do talk about it. In short, he shows what a marvel it is. The Central Line: Geographer Danny Dorling tells the stories of the people who live along 32 stops of the Central Line to illustrate the extent and impact of inequality in Britain today. The Piccadilly Line: Peter York, co-author of the 80s bestseller, The Sloane Ranger Handbook charts the progress of the dream of grandeur and aspiration in London and chronicles London's elites. The Hammersmith & City Line: Artist and filmmaker, Philippe Parreno, who created the documentary Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, takes us on a unique voyage through London - a journey without the typical purposes of a journey, an artistic, psychogeographical path.

In this report looking at policy for improving road and rail access to ports, the Transport Committee urges the Department for Transport (DfT) to become a keener advocate for UK ports. The Government should contribute to significant improvements to strategic networks which also deliver wider benefits - rather than simply expect port operators to pick up the entire bill for measures required to mitigate increased traffic due to port expansion. If the Government chooses to apply European Commission state aid rules in this area more strictly than other EU countries it should explain why it does so. Policy in this area should be applied consistently across the country. While some ports have contributed towards transport schemes to improve access, others have not and the differences in approach have not been explained or justified. Ports should also continue to contribute to local transport infrastructure improvements, following discussions with relevant local bodies. The Department for Transport should demonstrate whether port master plans have had any impact, highlighting good examples of such plans and of how they have influenced decision makers. Finally, the Government should devise a more effective successor to the Waterborne Freight Grant, to stimulate coastal shipping.
