Friedrich Schiller is not only one of the leading poets and dramatists of German Classicism but also an inspiring philosopher. His essay "Über Anmut und Würde" (On Grace and Dignity) marks a radical break with Enlightenment thinking and its morally prescriptive agenda. Interpretation of ancient Greek literature is often enough distorted by the preconceptions of modern times, especially on ancient morality. This is often equivalent to begging the question. If we think e.g. of aretê, which has different meanings in different contexts, we shall think in English (or in Modern Greek or in French or in German) and shall falsify the phenomena. If we are to understand the Greek concept e.g. of aretê we must study the nature of the situations in which it is applied. For it is an important fact in the study of Greek society that the Greeks used the one word (e.g. aretê) where we use different words. If we are to understand properly the texts, we have to view them in their historical and social context. Ancient Greek thought needs to be studied together with politics, ethics, and economic behaviour. Moreover, the best insights can be found in those who confine themselves to the terms of each ancient author's analysis. From this principle each of the contributions of the volume begins.

Eine junge Frau begibt sich wegen ihrer jahrelangen Essstörung in eine psychotherapeutische Behandlung. Sie will gesund werden und sie will dem unerträglichen Druck ihrer Familie entfliehen. Die Mutter verfolgt sie psychisch und in anderen Hinsichten bis in das Therapiezimmer. Auch die Psychotherapeutin entgeht diesen Angriffen nicht. Die Mutter kennt nur ein Ziel: Verhindern, dass in die Öffentlichkeit gelangt, was sich in ihrer Familie abspielt. Als die Tochter dennoch die begonnene Psychotherapie fortsetzt, ersinnt die Mutter eine Niedertracht. Dazu ist ihr jedes Mittel Recht: Lüge, Betrug, Intrige. Die notwendige Behandlung für die junge Frau droht in Schutt und Asche gelegt zu werden. Dabei öffnen Lücken in Gesetzen sehr unterschiedlichen Motiven Tür und Tor. Ihre Nutzung wird zur freien Verfügung zweifelhafter moralischer Grundhaltungen gestellt, und zwar in unterschiedlichen und zahlreichen gesellschaftlichen Bereichen. Unsicherheit und Angst übernehmen die Oberhand. Private Vereinbarungen zwischen Ärzten und Patienten, speziell die Gebührenordnung für Psychologische Psychotherapeuten (GOP) werden im vorliegenden Roman neben der Gebührenordnung für Ärzte (GOÄ) zum Dreh- und Angelpunkt. Geltendes Recht einerseits und andererseits moralische Grundhaltungen, wie sie sich offen oder verdeckt auf sehr unterschiedliche Werte und manchmal sogar auf die gleichen Werte aus anderer Perspektive berufend, jeden Tag frei und fröhlich ausleben können, führen nicht selten zu großen Schäden an Leib und Seele. Oftmals wird das gesamte Leben, dasjenige, das hätte gelebt werden können, vernichtet. Das Leid der so getroffenen und zu Opfern gemachten Menschen wird gesellschaftlich und gesetzlich toleriert. Toleranz wird so ad absurdum geführt oder gar ins Gegenteil verkehrt, und Menschen, die derart getroffen werden, verhöhnt. Sie müssen selbst sehen, wo sie bleiben. Alle Angaben zu Personen und Handlungen sind erfunden. Ähnlichkeiten zu lebenden Personen sind zufällig.
