Diese Studie analysiert den Werdegang Max Brods (1884-1968) während der ersten Jahrzehnte des 20. Jahrhunderts im kulturellen und politischen Prager Kontext und vor dem Hintergrund der für diesen Kontext charakteristischen Identitätsprobleme. Brod versucht zunächst, das Identitätsproblem durch eine vielfältige Produktion, in der sich der Wunsch ausdrückt, einer literarischen Bewegung anzugehören und sich seiner Identität als Schriftsteller zu versichern, sowie durch eine „indifferentistische" Lebensphilosophie zu lösen. Als sich dieser Versuch als erfolglos erweist, entwickelt er eine persönliche Auffassung vom Judentum und von der sozialen Funktion der Juden als Vermittler. Dies bildet fortan die Grundlage seiner Identität und führt ihn dazu, eines der führenden Mitglieder des tschechoslowakischen Zionismus zu werden und eine aktive Rolle im politischen Leben der ersten Tschechoslowakischen Republik Masaryks auszufüllen, um die Anerkennung der jüdischen Nationalität zu erzwingen. Brods Identität als „jüdischer Dichter deutscher Zunge" mündet außerdem in eine kulturelle Vermittlertätigkeit zugunsten der Mitglieder des Prager Kreises (vor allem Werfels, Kafkas, Baums und Kischs) und tschechischer Künstler, vor allem Leoš Janáč eks. Allerdings wird sie durch das Aufkommen des Nationalsozialismus grundlegend in Frage gestellt.

Für keine andere Zeitung hat Joseph Roth so lange geschrieben wie für das seinerzeit weit über die Grenzen der Tschechoslowakei hinaus gelesene "Prager Tagblatt": Der erste Beitrag des damals noch ganz unbekannten Germanistikstudenten, ein Gedicht, erschien 1917, der letzte 1937, als der mittlerweile berühmte Journalist und Romancier schon seit Jahren im Exil lebte. Das "Prager Tagblatt" war für seine liberale und demokratische Gesinnung ebenso bekannt wie für sein vorzügliches Feuilleton - hier schrieb in den zwanziger Jahren, was in der deutschen Literatur Rang und Namen hatte. Falsches Pathos ließ der besondere Stil dieser Zeitung - Max Brod und Friedrich Torberg haben das ihm eigentümliche Element von Bohème beschrieben - nicht zu. Das tat Roth wohl, und noch wichtiger war ihm ihre verantwortungsvolle politische Haltung: Mit dem "Prager Tagblatt" brauchte er niemals zu brechen, hier konnte er ohne Vorbehalt über die Entwicklung in Deutschland berichten. Die Edition, die mit über 150 Beiträgen eine weit umfangreichere Mitarbeit Roths beim "Prager Tagblatt" erkennen lässt, als bisher erschlossen wurde - auch mit noch unbekannten Texten -, folgt den Drucken im "Prager Tagblatt" in unveränderter Textgestalt.

In the spring of 1945, Fuhrer and Reich Chancellor Adolf Hitler, President Edvard Benes, and Marshal Josip Broz Tito stood as examples of the complete rupture between the Germans and Austrians on the one hand, and the Czechs, Slovaks, Slovenes, Croats, Serbs, and Bosniaks on the other. The total break that occurred in World War II with war crimes, crimes against humanity, and even genocides (particularly against the Jews and "Gypsies") had a long pre-history, beginning with violent nationalist clashes in the Habsburg Monarchy during the revolutions of 1848/49. Therefore, this monograph - based on a broad range of international primary and secondary sources - explores the development of the political, legal, economic, social, and cultural "communities of conflict" within Austria-Hungary, especially in the Bohemian and South Slavic countries, the making of the Paris Peace Treaties in 1919/20 by violating President Wilson's principle of self-determination, particularly in drawing new borders and creating new economic units, and the perpetuated ethnic-national conflicts between Czechs and Germans, Slovaks and Magyars, Slovenes and Germans, Croats and Serbs as well as Serbs and Germans in the successor states, deepening the differences between the nations of East-Central Europe. Although many kings, presidents, chancellors, ministers, governors, diplomats, business tycoons, generals, Nazi-Gauleiter, higher SS and police leaders, and Communist functionaries have appeared as historical actors in the 170 years of East-Central and Southeastern European history, Hitler, Benes, and Tito remain especially present in historical memory at the beginning of the twenty-first century.
