Aus eigenen Briefen, Feuilletons und ausgewählten Prosaarbeiten, die Joseph Roths Empfindungen und Eindrücke von Menschen, Situationen und politischen Verhältnissen beschreiben, entsteht ein Mosaik der Stationen seines Lebens. »Ich habe keine Heimat, wenn ich von der Tatsache absehe, dass ich in mir selbst zu Hause bin.« Dieser Satz Joseph Roths charakterisiert ihn wie kaum ein anderer als das, was er Zeit seines Lebens war: ein Getriebener. 1913 kommt der Neunzehnjährige aus Lemberg in Galizien zum Studium nach Wien. 1939 stirbt Joseph Roth im Pariser Exil. Dazwischen liegt ein rast- und ruheloses Leben als Dichter, Schriftsteller und Journalist, das ihn von Wien über Berlin, wo seine ersten Romane erscheinen (»Hotel Savoy«, 1924), und Russland schließlich in die französische Hauptstadt führt. Hier entsteht zwischen 1933 und 1939 fast die Hälfte seines literarischen Werks, so z. B. »Die Beichte eines Mörders« oder »Die Kapuzinergruft«. In seinen Feuilletons, die er seit 1919 regelmäßig schreibt und in verschiedenen Zeitungen veröffentlicht, ist Roth immer aktiver, engagierter Chronist seiner Zeit. Unermüdlich und mit ungeheurer Schärfe und Brillanz schreibt er an gegen Staatswillkür und seit 1933 gegen den Nationalsozialismus. In seinen Briefen, u. a. an Benno Reifenberg, René Schickele, Stefan Zweig, erkennt man den privaten, glücklos Kämpfenden als Opfer der Zeitläufte – und seiner selbst. Helmut Peschina hat im vorliegenden Band Texte Joseph Roths aus diesen drei Gattungen chronologisch verschränkt, mit einem Vorwort versehen und zu einem beeindruckenden Lebensmosaik zusammengefügt.

Für keine andere Zeitung hat Joseph Roth so lange geschrieben wie für das seinerzeit weit über die Grenzen der Tschechoslowakei hinaus gelesene "Prager Tagblatt": Der erste Beitrag des damals noch ganz unbekannten Germanistikstudenten, ein Gedicht, erschien 1917, der letzte 1937, als der mittlerweile berühmte Journalist und Romancier schon seit Jahren im Exil lebte. Das "Prager Tagblatt" war für seine liberale und demokratische Gesinnung ebenso bekannt wie für sein vorzügliches Feuilleton - hier schrieb in den zwanziger Jahren, was in der deutschen Literatur Rang und Namen hatte. Falsches Pathos ließ der besondere Stil dieser Zeitung - Max Brod und Friedrich Torberg haben das ihm eigentümliche Element von Bohème beschrieben - nicht zu. Das tat Roth wohl, und noch wichtiger war ihm ihre verantwortungsvolle politische Haltung: Mit dem "Prager Tagblatt" brauchte er niemals zu brechen, hier konnte er ohne Vorbehalt über die Entwicklung in Deutschland berichten. Die Edition, die mit über 150 Beiträgen eine weit umfangreichere Mitarbeit Roths beim "Prager Tagblatt" erkennen lässt, als bisher erschlossen wurde - auch mit noch unbekannten Texten -, folgt den Drucken im "Prager Tagblatt" in unveränderter Textgestalt.

Focuses on his first two novels: "Das Spinnennetz" (1923) and "Tarabas: Ein Gast auf dieser Erde" (1934). The first, discussed on pp. 40-104, is a visionary outline of the crisis of the early Weimar Republic and a psychologically persuasive representation of the promotion of an antisemitic careerist who, from the position of a simple teacher, becomes the Imperial Head of Security. The second, discussed on pp. 148-212, also focuses on the figure of an antisemite. Discusses, also, the journalistic work "Juden auf Wanderschaft" (1925-27), which deals with victims of antisemitism, and Roth's novel "The Antichrist" (1934) which discusses Jew-hatred. Roth's interpretation of antisemitism as anti-Christianity must be understood in the context of his conversion to Catholicism, while his explication of Nazi antisemitism does not take into account the modern components of Jew-hatred.

Scott Spector’s adventurous cultural history maps for the first time the "territories" carved out by German-Jewish intellectuals living in Prague at the dawn of the twentieth century. Spector explores the social, cultural, and ideological contexts in which Franz Kafka and his contemporaries flourished, revealing previously unseen relationships between politics and culture. His incisive readings of a broad array of German writers feature the work of Kafka and the so-called "Prague circle" and encompass journalism, political theory, Zionism, and translation as well as literary program and practice. With the collapse of German-liberal cultural and political power in the late-nineteenth-century Habsburg Empire, Prague’s bourgeois Jews found themselves squeezed between a growing Czech national movement on the one hand and a racial rather than cultural conception of Germanness on the other. Displaced from the central social and cultural position they had come to occupy, the members of the "postliberal" Kafka generation were dazzlingly productive and original, far out of proportion to their numbers. Seeking a relationship between ideological crisis and cultural innovation, Spector observes the emergence of new forms of territoriality. He identifies three fundamental areas of cultural inventiveness related to this Prague circle’s political and cultural dilemma. One was Expressionism, a revolt against all limits and boundaries, the second was a spiritual form of Zionism incorporating a novel approach to Jewish identity that seems to have been at odds with the pragmatic establishment of a Jewish state, and the third was a sort of cultural no-man’s-land in which translation and mediation took the place of "territory." Spector’s investigation of these areas shows that the intensely particular, idiosyncratic experience of German-speaking Jews in Prague allows access to much broader and more general conditions of modernity. Combining theoretical sophistication with a refreshingly original and readable style, Prague Territories illuminates some early signs of a contemporary crisis from which we have not yet emerged.

In November 1952, Rudolf Slánský and thirteen other Czechoslovak high-ranking officials of the Communist party and the government were accused of conspiracy against the People's Republic in the most notorious and last ever Stalinist show trial, taking place in Prague. Eleven of them were executed, three sentenced to life imprisonment. The Slánský Trial differed from other Stalinist show trials in the number of death penalties handed down and its openly anti-Semitic tendencies. Eleven of the accused were of Jewish origin. Resorting to the biographies of two writers who grew up in Bohemia, Louis Fürnberg, author of the song "The Party is Always Right," and F. C. Weiskopf, Jan Gerber explores why, only seven years after the liberation of Auschwitz, anti-fascists carried out a trial in which Jews were indicted for being Jews. He examines further why, of all places, this trial took place in communist Czechoslovakia, a country that had been considered an island of democracy and tolerance during the interwar period. The biographies of Fürnberg and Weiskopf, who in the early 1950s were impacted by the general political atmosphere created by the Slánský Trial, and, fearing persecution, ultimately left Czechoslovakia for the GDR, show that the Slánský Trial did not solely derive from the initiative of Moscow. At the same time, the conflicts over nationality of the interwar period continued in the trial ideologically encoded.
