The importance of the political thought of Tomas G. Masaryk (1850-1937), the first president of Czechoslovakia, has been based on two considerations. One was his image as the principal shaper of the democratic culture in inter-war Czechoslovakia. The other image was as a model of political prudence and sagacity not only for East-Central Europe, but one recognized universally. He was called by his contemporaries "the wisest European of today" and "the greatest man in Europe." John MacCormac, writing in the New York Times in 1930, saw in Masaryk a personage of the same caliber as Washington, Lincoln, and Wilson. Masaryk brought to his political activity the assets of profound background in scholarship, as well as a religious flavor. A leitmotif of Masaryk's intellectual search was his desire to establish a religious dimension to the human experience. Unable to accept his native Catholicism, whether traditional or liberal, he turned to the two modernizing trends in German Lutheranism that had jettisoned traditional dogma and liturgy. Zdenĕk V. David's main interest is to probe the mind of the man as revealed through his writings on philosophy and religion, and to map out his position in relation to the principal Austrian, British, French, and German – to some extent also American and Russian – thinkers with whom he dealt in his philosophical and religious writings. . He focuses on the ideas behind Masaryk's political pronouncements and activities.

Between the wars a personality cult grew around Masaryk. These three volumes constitute the first balanced critical assessment of the actual achievement of the university professor who became the first president of Czechoslovakia. In this the first volume scholars from Europe and North America offer new insights into the career and ideas of Masaryk during the three decades preceding the outbreak of World War I. They appraise his role as critic of injustice and outworn tradition, providing a most significant interpretation of his place in modern history.

In this biography of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (1850-1937), the founder of the Czechoslovak republic, and of his son Jan Masaryk (1886-1948), who became foreign minister in the Czechoslovak government-in-exile in London during World War II, the author retraces their lives against the dramatic background of the history of Central and Eastern Europe. “Zeman is sympathetic to his subjects but completely honest in presenting them as men, not myths.” — John C. Campbell, Foreign Affairs “Dr. Zeman draws an interesting portrait of [T.G. Masaryk] the ‘scholar President’, an individualistic, curiously apolitical and yet far-sighted figure... The author has written a sound biography, at its best in the descriptions of Masaryk’s attempts to found the new state.” — Lisanne Radice, International Affairs “Zeman’s portrait of the Masaryks is engagingly written and may be profitably read by the non-specialist.” — Victor S. Mamatey, The American Historical Review

A Companion to Jan Hus includes eleven substantial essays covering the central aspects of the life, thought and commemoration of Jan Hus († 1415), Czech theologian, reformer and martyr. Besides older experienced specialists in the Hussite studies, also younger researchers who enter the scientific discourse with new approaches participated in the volume. Experts and students alike will profit from this guide to Jan Hus, who was well known as follower of John Wyclif and forerunner of Martin Luther. Burning of Jan Hus at the stake at the Council of Constance gave rise in Bohemia to religious and social revolt that ushered the European reformations of the 16th century.

The United States Revolutionary Russia And The Rise Of Czechoslovakia written by Betty Miller Unterberger and has been published by Texas A&M University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2000 with History categories.

The First World War and the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia set the stage on which Woodrow Wilson had to direct U.S. policy toward Czechoslovakia as it sought liberation in the early twentieth century. Betty Unterberger's now classic study of the ferment of this period and the way President Wilson dealt with it gives insight into both Great Power relations and the next eighty years of developments in Central Europe. A decade after the original publication of The United States, Revolutionary Russia, and the Rise of Czechoslovakia, Unterberger has added an updated introduction that reconsiders the region in light of new knowledge gleaned from recently available Soviet, Czech, and French documents.
