Cantù pensò a uno studio complessivo intorno a lui e alle sue Opere, molte furono le notizie che di lui misero in luce gli stu diosi del Manzoni e del Porta, primo tra tutti il prof. C. Salvioni, mentre altre notizie vennero fuori da ricerche dirette, ma parziali e non siste matiche, come parziali furono gli studi finora pub blicati intorno alle opere. Fu preparato cosi un materiale abbondante, ma vario e disperso, e30pra di esso io ho compiuto questo mio studio: ope ra, in parte, per il vecchio, di revisione, in parte, per il nuovo, di scelta; nell'insieme di ordi namento e di sintesi. Ma nella valutazione de gli scritti del Grossi io ho portato il mio sen timento e il mio criterio, mirando a non sepa rare l'uomo dal poeta e a cercare nell'animo di lui e nelle vicende della sua vita la ragione della sua poesia.
