Faccenda molto spinosa, nell’Inghilterra elisabettiana, trattare in teatro personaggi della storia recente come, ad esempio, Tommaso Moro, umanista amato e stimato, ma anche mite e tenace oppositore del nuovo matrimonio di Enrico VIII con Anna Bolena, madre di Elisabetta I. Tuttavia la sua ascesa alle più alte sfere della politica nazionale e la sua rovinosa caduta costituivano una trama perfetta per chiunque volesse denunciare la natura corrotta del potere e le sue derive violente. Il dramma Tommaso Moro fu composto da alcuni dei più grandi drammaturghi elisabettiani e fra essi, ormai è assodato, va annoverato Shakespeare, non solo autore delle pagine scritte di suo pugno, ma probabilmente ispiratore dell’opera. Ipotesi, questa, quanto mai suggestiva perché rivelerebbe una stretta vicinanza ideale fra due figure straordinarie: il celebre e ironico statista e uno fra i più grandi poeti di ogni tempo, capace come pochi di leggere lo spirito dell’uomo e di esprimerlo con parole e immagini che non hanno conosciuto oblio. Tommaso Moro è quindi qualcosa di più di un dramma teatrale: dopo essere stato un mistero per molti secoli – a lungo ritenuto perduto e tuttora molto discusso dagli studiosi, è stato portato sulle scene dalla Royal Shakespeare Company solo nel 2005 –, oggi appare come un’opera di fondamentale importanza per comprendere a fondo la figura di Shakespeare, in special modo in rapporto alla sua controversa appartenenza alla fede cattolica che, come scrive nell’accurato saggio introduttivo Joseph Pearce, proprio queste pagine renderebbero plausibile.
