Antoinette “Toni” Rose Lobo had never seen a ghost, but didn’t think it was unusual that her father did. At the age of five, Toni also didn’t think it was strange that she had a small, humanoid like creature who looked very much like a mythical demon for a best friend. He had red skin, two small horns, and glowing red eyes. His name was Little Wolf. His mouth featured two sharp little fangs. His body was muscular and well formed. She wasn’t supposed to let anyone see him, but if they did, all they would see was a hairless red rat. Toni liked the idea that he was her special friend that only she, Mommy, and Daddy knew what he really was. One day she asked why Daddy could see the ghosts but she and Mommy couldn’t. “Daddy’s special,” Mommy answered. “That’s why he can see them and we can’t.” Toni thought about that and it bothered her. “How come I’m not special?” she finally asked. “Because you’re not old enough,” Mommy answered. “Will I be special when I get old enough?” “Maybe,” Mommy told her. “Maybe.”

Four young women are brutally attacked near an all-black town in rural Oklahoma. The inevitability of this attack, and the attempts to avert it, lie at the heart of Paradise. Spanning the birth of the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam, the counter-culture of the late 1970s, deftly manipulating past, present and future, this novel reveals the interior lives of its American citizens with astonishing clarity. It is through their eyes we see the clashes that have defined a nation. 'When Morrison writes at her best, you can feel the workings of history through her prose' Hilary Mantel, Spectator 'Morrison almost single-handedly took American fiction forward in the second half of the 20th century, to a place where it could finally embrace the subtleties and contradictions of the great stain of race which has blighted the republic since its inception' Caryl Phillips, Guardian BY THE NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING AUTHOR OF BELOVED **Winner of the PEN/Saul Bellow award for achievement in American fiction**

Discover the early life and legacy of groundbreaking American writer Toni Morrison in this beautifully illustrated and “awe-inspiring” (School Library Journal, starred review) nonfiction picture book biography. Born Chloe Ardelia Wofford in Ohio, Toni Morrison grew up listening to her family tell myths, legends, and stories from the Bible. She loved hearing the music and power of the words. Toni also heard new stories from the students from other countries who went to her school. After an early childhood of soaking up tales from those around her, it was no surprise Toni grew into a voracious reader. She worked at her town library as a teenager and was an editor for a New York publisher as an adult. When it came time for her to write her own stories, she knew she wanted to write about her people—Black people. Early in the morning and late at night after her children were asleep, Toni began work on what would become an acclaimed and trailblazing body of work. This luminous picture book has back matter with further reading on Toni Morrison’s life and work.

Bringing Tony Home written by Tissa Abeysekara and has been published by North Atlantic Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-11-25 with Fiction categories.

Set in the 1940s and 1960s, Bringing Tony Home is a masterful modern example of a timeless genre, the bildungsroman. In the title novella, a boy returns to his old home to find Tony, his beloved dog who was abandoned when economic circumstances forced the family to leave. “Bringing Tony Home” recounts this perilous journey in detail, movingly tracing the boy’s rescue attempts and his spiraling emotions as he endures changes occurring in his family. In “Elsewhere: Something Like a Love Story,” a young boy finds forbidden love with a schoolmate scorned for her poverty. “Elsewhere” continues their saga, touching on the bittersweet memories they share as adults, and on the woman’s increasingly precarious place in a society concerned only with status. The other stories, “Poor Young Man: A Requiem” and “Hark, The Moaning Pond: A Grandmother’s Tale,” delve into a young man’s relationship with his father as the latter’s fortunes fade, and into the now-mature man’s attempts to come to grips with the death of his grandmother and what she symbolized. Abeysekara’s ability to evoke the sights and sounds of another time and place, and his skill in rendering the inner lives of his characters, make Bringing Tony Home a remarkable read.
